Have an offer for a quant dev role which is very DevOps/intra heavy, TC: >= 500k with potential of PnL sharing Another offer for a dev/researcher role in an AI/novel computing start-up, TC: 220k Which one should I take? I am very conflicted. Quant dev offer: pros: high TC with big upside, a leadership position; amazing access to the ins-n-outs/operations of a “money making machine “, so to speak. Cons: it’s DevOps heavy; on-calls very likely; worse WLB; will I pigeon-hole myself into DevOps guy in the future? Can I still transition back to devs/pure SWE if I want to? Dev/research role: Pros: very interesting subject matter; working on cutting edge problems and tech stack; decent WLB; potential opportunities to jump more lucrative positions in other tech companies that are pursuing similar endeavors Cons: joining as the most junior person (relevant experience-wise); very mediocre TC; both TC and title growth will be very limited due to research-centric/academic nature of the startup TC: 210K YOE: PhD + 7 #engineering #offer #devops
$$$$$
It might be the case that the startup role will lead to millions. Or it might lead to absolutely nothing. The odds of the former are significantly lower, statistically speaking. Ask yourself this question: if you could buy $10k in stocks in each company, which would you invest it into? I think that would answer your question.
Lets be honest it ll lead to nothing
Is the startup really going to have decent WLB, esp in this economy? I think a great deal depends on your financial goals as well, and how secure you think each role is. Cultural fit and quality of life might also be something to factor in. Being the most junior when you’re already senior can be a big plus for your growth. You could make some really fantastic connections with brilliant people doing interesting things, who you might follow to other good and interesting opportunities. The money is hard to set aside though.
Take the research position. Looks like their work area is closer to your heart, and you'll get to learn a lot from senior folks in a fast paced env. Plus you're a mid-career PhD.
Give up 300k for passion project LOL
Yeah idk about that. PhD + 7 years of experience to be making 200k? No shot. The quant position is where he should be going, my guess, op is around mid 30s, he should be Maximizing profit as fast as possible so that he doesn’t have to keep working in his late fifties.
Lol is this even a question. Of course follow the money (with invest) and success will follow you
if you don’t take the 500k job, pass it on to your boiii
Go for the money. You can do all the passion projects you want when you’re rich.
