My friend is new to filing taxes and it looks like TurboTax doesn’t support non-citizens. How do y’all file taxes? Just use H&R Block or some other in person filing service? Edit: Thanks everyone! I’ll suggest sprintax, sounds like the way to go.
Huh? Turbotax absolutely works for OPT folks Protip tho, dont use TT. FreetaxUSA is the same except you dont have to pay and they wont spam your UI telling you to do so
Turbotax files 1040, while OPT folks should file 1040NR. The NR form allows for much greater tax refunds like no medicare + social security etc. Sprintax is the very few which supports 1040NR afaik.
It depends if you are a considered resident for tax purpose. For international student, its 5 year in US. If you meet this condition you can file 1040 else you should file 1040NR
No. Citizens might be incorrect. IRS has different roles for “tax resident” than immigration
You have to file in paper. Non resident aliens have to do paper filing. Not many softwares support that. I remember sprintax and glacier (for federal only) supports that. You will need to print your forms and send them to IRS and you state tax collector.
