Purchased an Apple iPad Pro at 15% discount from a friend of mine through their Friends & Family employee discount. However, my friend is claiming that they have to pay taxes on the 15% amount (~200$) as it is considered as a monetary benefit that is reported to IRS. They are requesting the tax amount they are paying on the device purchase. Apple employees, can you please confirm if I owe him the tax money or if my friend is trying to play me to get some $. T.C: 250k
Yep, used it many times never paid taxes.
Pretty sure the company subsidizes the taxes
Sounds like a gigantic load of 💩
Your friend is asking for a little bit of compensation for helping you. Give them some money, or unfriend them (the friendship is already tainted anyway).
It is technically a taxable benefit but Apple pays those taxes on behalf of the employee if it was purchased via the EPP, which it sounds like it was.
I'm pretty sure this is not true. Same reason why credit card rewards and airlines miles are not taxable.
Well I literally just looked it up on our policy site so 🤷🏻♀️
Your friend is right.
Your friend is really cheap
Btw tell him to read taxes section on epp site. Apple covers the tax amount.
Apple does pay the taxes . And it’s only taxed when the discount exceeds profit margins which isn’t the case with 15% Friends and Family discount. It does happen with personal 25% on some products. It’s been discussed on internal channel quite a few times. TLDR: No
Well kids, I hope you learnt your lesson. Don’t ask acquaintances or people you don’t know that well for the Apple discount. Most of them will be annoyed if you even ask, or they help you but only on a condition like this

Cleared Amazon onsite, but lowballed.
Used to work at Apple and I don’t ever remember having to pay taxes on the discount. Either your friend is a square and thought that since he was saving money he should go out of his way to report that to the IRS or he’s BSing you. What would be the point of a discount if you have to pay the same amount towards taxes?
