Say, I received 100K sign-on bonus in Oct 2019. I paid taxes from this full amount. My W-2 includes full amount in the income. If I leave in March 2020 I will have to repay back the pro-rated part for the remaining 7 months. When reporting taxes for 2019, can I somehow indicate I already repaid part of the bonus back? If not, what should I report on my taxes in 2020 to get back the pro-rated part of the taxes that I already paid from the full amount? Thanks!
You would report the payback in the fiscal year it occurred and receive the refund, if any, after filing that year’s taxes.
If it was 2019, you haven't paid your 2019 taxes yet. So you will get it back in your regular refund.
You’ll get a W2C, if not ask for it. You can retroactively get the taxes back.
Why leave so soon BTW?
