I've been at Lyft < 2 months and 75% of my small team got laid off. I had an offer with Square a few months ago (TC 225k) which I turned down for Lyft. Should I consider emailing Square and saying I'm interested again? Recruiter had told me to let them know if I was ever interested again. My thoughts are that Square may have better job/comp security than Lyft. Although, is this flawed thinking? If I survived the Lyft layoff, does that mean my Lyft job security is better? One factor to consider is that Lyft stock grant is reset yearly so somewhat insulated from market fluctuations, less upside and less downside, whereas Square does the standard 4 year vesting TC: 240k (thinking if I do this, I should hit up Square before the Meta layoffs)
Why do you think square has better job security? The stock has been down 75% Just that no layoff has not been announced yet and like any other poor leadership who does not think far ahead, they will also make an announcement that growth has slowed down and we over hired. Square is not any better than any company out there …maybe a tiny bit better. They have lot of teams that basically do nothing all day and continue to hire
What teams do nothing?
Every team lol.
Stay put at Lyft. If you get laid off then take severance and go to Square
This!
Why not just ping the square recruiter and see what they say? I would say to jump ship as you will be expected to hold the fort although it sounds like a lot of the teams institutional knowledge is gone
If you survived the layoff going to Square just means risking another one.
I mean, you’ve already escaped this one, why would you change companies and risk another chance of being laid off?
Yoe?
Ur safest where you are right now tbh
If you go to square you will be new and you can get laid off if they do it because of that
If you want job security I have news for you - you won't find it in either company. Look for a company that has cash and revenue, not hype and "prestige".
Do at least little interview prep every week so that you will have a head start in case you get laid off. Wait for severance, don’t jump ship unless they have cut your pay
75% of the team got layoff and you survived even tho you are new. That’s nothing short of miracle. Luck is in your favour. Also, since Lyft did layoff recently then perhaps next round of layoff might not happen till next quarter whereas square could conduct layoff sooner than that Did you see what’s going on in crypto market? Rug pull after rug pull. Whole ponzy crypto market is melting. Coinbase & Square have tight coupling with crypto market so these will take the heat as well.
Lyft spared new joinees from layoffs in 2020 also. It's choice of known devil vs unknown that time. This time, they seem to have looked at several other factors
