My teammates keep pushing code late at night. Sometimes 10 pm. My manager doesn't really do anything about it. I think this is making the team culture bad. I wonder if I should bring it up with my manager during my 1:1. As a parent I do not want to work after hours unless absolutely necessary and this type of culture is adding a lot of pressure in my life. Most my teammates are single men with little to no family responsibilities. Edit: I think the original post wasn't clear enough. The problem is not people pushing code late at night. The problem is that similar expectations are being set by pinging off hours, setting times to execute tasks off hours, etc. People can work whenever they want. I just don't want to be sucked into it because I have a life outside work.
Lol come to Tesla and what you see is normal
But the stock price .. but the stock price …
Stop caring about other’s business and just do your own thing and mind your own business. Maybe they just work like 2 - 10 schedule. Be open minded since it’s wfh
This, I used to work much later hours since it was just more productive for me
You cannot ignore this as your output would be less compared to your peers who are working 80 hours a week. Guess who gets shown the door, the guy who slacks by working 40 hours a week
I would say the hours you push code don’t matter as long as you can deliver as much quality code as them. If they are delivering more than you should be worried and try to switch teams as it is probably a team with high expectations.
I'm gonna be honest, if you go to your manager and say you don't want people working at hours they choose, it'll look bad. Just ignore it and do your own thing.
That's fair.
There's an important distinction between "working at hours they choose" and "working significantly more hours than normal for the company/org." The latter definitely could indicate a problem, and it's worth checking if the manager is aware. The framing shouldn't be about not *wanting* teammates to work as long as they do. It should be about considering whether there's something wrong with the team's responsibilities or structure if there is a *need* for people to overwork to meet expectations.
Be effective in the normal work hours, and you won't need to give af. Many of the people pushing code at night are probably pushing low quality crap and/or watching YouTube during the day and having to catch up later.
It’s possible your teammate can’t focus during the day and prefers to work at night. There’s no expectation of getting a response or code pushed past 5pm
You can’t dictate when people do their work it’s a part of the WLB mantra… are they pinging or emailing you and expecting a response at odd hours? Has your manager said “why don’t you work till 10pm” … If not then please mind your own business 😊
They do ping past work hours. I was pinged at 9pm and asked if I could do an architecture presentation the next morning.
I just turn my slack to DND mode and check the next day unless I am on support.
Make them stop! How dare they work when they want to.
Your sarcasm here doesn't make sense. This is not a one off. This is the general culture where working late is being promoted. If you think that's normal, I feel bad for you.
Who said I’m being sarcastic? Not only I want to work in tech and make more money than 99.99% of humans, I also want to not even let my teammates work the hours they want. They need to understand my family needs me and sign off.
