Hi blind community! I really need some serious advise from you guys based on my current situation. I’ve been hired as a tech lead (L5) for last 1yr 9 months. My TC is 145k and YOE is 14. But my title is Software Engineer after the recent org title changes. Anyway, Im very hand on and work really hard for my team. I pretty much do everything for the team from designing solution for problems, to implement/code new important features, to code review for team members, to train junior developers, to presenting all new features to our clients end of sprints, to communicate with partners with tech features and recommendations , to PROD support and what not. I spent almost 10 hrs/day for work and also provide quality work. My review for 1st year was above average. This year half-year review was excellent. My manager and clients always provide excellent feedback time to time. But just good review and feedback is not enough for me. I definitely need title/promotion for the work I do . Also I need a big jump in my salary based on the quality work I provide for the team. Now my question for you guys are: - should I talk to my manager in next 1-1 about this frustration ? - should I ask for the promotion ? And the salary bump straight upfront ? -2 yrs of work and excellent review is good enough to emphasize for promotion and salary bump? - OR should I prepare for LC and GTFO? Please advise! Write your promo doc and give it to your manager. This helps two ways - you'll get clarity if you really deserve a promotion, and it will make it easy for your manager to make a case of you are truly there.
145k at 14 yoe is terrible. "Software Engineer" title at 14 yoe is terrible. The fact that you're asking us whether you should even bring this up to your manager after 2 years is terrible. This story smells.
That’s actually decent if he/she is talking just about base salary and is in Charlotte /Phoenix /Orlando / Dallas etc .
It's really not when there are so many opportunities to work remotely for companies anywhere. I was making double that working remote from a low COL area even before covid with half of OP's yoe
LC and GTFO. If you're working 10 hours a day at a bank, you're doing it wrong.
If you talk to your manager and he can help you, what kind of pay bump would you expect from wells fargo? And compare that with the pay bump you think you could achieve with LC and GTFO. Do you like your job enough to sacrifice the difference in earnings potential? If not, there is no point wasting time talking to your boss because the result would be unsatisfactory.
Others pointed out salary and made sense to jump or stay depending on the potential bump. For title, does your company use flat title across regardless yoe and level, or you were just being under leveled? If it is their policy, it is hard to ask for more. I know using flat title is not uncommon nowadays, my company does it too, but I don’t care atm as long as my pay is fair.
Is 145k base or TC ? Also what location ?

LC and GTFO. ( 2 years is a long time for your manager and you not to be on the same page.) your manager and you should be discussing your goals and whether you are on track frequently. If that’s not the case, my advice is to bring up your goals and intentions early in 1:1s , May be six to 12 months before you ideally to be promoted and confirm/reassess every month to ensure that you are on track. You own your career.
It sounds like OP hasn't even mentioned it since they're in here asking if they should even bring it up to their manager. That's on them.
Not all companies work like Amazon. Yes OP owns his career, but many companies have much longer promotion cycles I think. Years, not months.
