Tech Workers (Especially Meta) do not have the πŸ’ to strike like SAG/WGA/UPS

Faced with an existential threat to their livelyhood due to Gen Ai the WGA (writers guild of america) and SAG (screen actors guild) have used the limited power that they have strike withhold their labor for the future of workers in their industry. Few understand the threat of AI to specific kinds of work like us in Tech and yet I am 100% certain that we'd never have the πŸ₯œ to organize/unionize/strike due in large part to the way we coddle and worship CEOs like Gods. If there were unions, they would. I’m not showing up to a strike to find out all my coworkers ditched me.

If all the SDE went on strike then they’d realize that everything will continue functioning and fire half of us. If writers and actors go on strike the entire production of movies and tv shows stops

The world is probably better off with less people watching tv and movies honestly

Yummy TY for proving my point. The core systems in big tech have some level of automation but the constant drive for innovation does not. They need us much more than we realize. See the pending explosion at Twitter, see the revenue growth stagnation in big tech prior to the AI hype. Production studios could start making gen ai content now and I'm sure many are trying But even the best available models still need tremendous amount of new input from human creators. In tech we believe too much in our own genius to realize that we, the human input is irreplaceable the current level of automation and market condition.

It seems you massively under estimate the undertaking that organizing a strike, let alone a union, require. Members of SAG AFTRA didn’t *want* to go in strike. There were months of negotiating, meetings, and preparation - and that’s with an existing union that has 160,000 members, a wealth of resources and support, negotiating committees, etc. If we are to be serious about a tech union, we need to be *serious* about a tech union. Committed. Organized. Smart.

There are people doing this. ewoc (workerorganizing.org) mentors and trains workers in all industries to organize. unions like cwa (through code-cwa) and opeiu (through tech1010) have organized tech workers into unions, and are seeking to do more.
