Born there, raised in the US. Want to go back since my family including my parents is all there now. Only thing holding me back is how that might impact my career. I would prefer to be in France, but am open to other countries like the Netherlands or Switzerland or Germany. Any Europeans on here who maybe did the opposite after working in the EU for a while? What kinds of companies should I look at? I don't really know the European job market at all. Thanks! TC 230k
AWS has an office there
Amsterdam has a more developed IT sector than Paris. Also consider London?
Yeah I see way more Amsterdam jobs on LinkedIn. London maybe but it feels more complicated since it’s no longer EU? Also don’t really like London but maybe!
Avoid London, biggest scam on earth, pure trash. I used to burn 10k gbp after tax in London and still lifestyle was worse than my Eastern European one with 2k lol.
Mistral AI
Datadog has a Paris office, I’ve heard that they have a good culture
Yeah -- unfortunately got an offer from NYC DD recently and turned them down lol
Microsoft, Google, Meta, Snowflake, Databricks, Criteo, Dataiku, Denodo, SAP, Oracle... there is plenty of tech companies which have local offices in Paris or nearby. I'm French and working for US companies since multiple years, never had any issues. I like the international aspect of it. US company pays more than local ones, but you won't see a US HCOL TC for sure, so be prepared for this. Lifestyle in Paris is great, lots of things to do. Learn something (sports, art, language...) to meet people. Transportation is meh - very easy to move everywhere but too many people everywhere. If you're young / single I would advise to find something in-town to avoid some of it plus being able to walk back to your place at any time. More expensive but very worthy until you starts a family. TC: 125k / YOE: 24 (and it's a quite good tc).
Find a full remote job in a startup in USA. Become an important asset (mediocre startup are the best) After you got the trust and know them well, move to eu with US salary
Like money? Stay here. Du rien. Merci a vous.
lol yeah the biggest difference but i am sort of wondering if I could try it for a few years (really do feel quite at home there and nice to be only a few hours by train from my parents) and if I hate it / feel like it's hard to have a good lifestyle, then move back to the US. Have both citizenships
There are SWE opportunities in every major city in the EU. The biggest difference with the US work-wise will be your comp (will be half or less) and the working hours. Also, EU is not big in remote work (not quite a thing as it is in the US), and you will need to go into the office almost (if not) everyday. Most countries have 5 weeks of vacation, and August is the month when everything stops to a halt in the EU. You will also pay more taxes (yes, that is possible), especially if you are not married and have no kids. Access to education (good public education), and affordable good food will be better. Healthcare is going to be similar, or cheaper if you have a family, though quality if care tends to be normalized down (meaning you will be tested for the bare minimum, and won’t be offered the latest treatments). Where are you based? That is the factor that will make it feel more or least different vibe wise.
