Tech equivalent level for my role?

I am currently in Goldman Sachs as a tech lead and manager of 15 people across NY and India (highly skilled team of PhDs, Master's, Postdocs if that matters). I am trying to find the level or role I should be looking at if I want to switch companies. I am currently an Associate and will be promoted to a VP end of the year(relevant for the GS folks). I am in a unique position where VPs report to me i.e. people with a senior title reporting to a junior one. This I get to know is very rare in GS. I got into this role due me being a top perfomer in the team and some other reasons. YOE: 4 and I have a Master's degree in CS. My research led to M1 being a role that seems relevant but I will let the community opine. TC: 250k

E4 or E5

Is my YOE limiting my level or is it that the work I do is characteristic of E4,E5? Thanks for the reply btw

Too much experience for E3, not nearly enough exp / credentials for E6 or M1. You are not even going to be considered for E6 unless you pass interviews with flying colors and convince everyone you are a diamond in the rough type.

L5 or L6

We interviewed few VPs from GS, usually L5 or L6

Keep in mind 1/2 of all GS employees are VP, and they can range from L4 to L7 even.

Wait what? Half of their employees have the title “Vice President”?

And L6 would be really a big stretch and extremely unlikely given the low YOE and the fact that you are not an actual VP.

E4 and too early to come in as M1. Size of org is not everything and you are an associate. Most VPs will be E5 and few people will be E6. M1 you need to have strong people leadership experience, which banking normally sucks at. Source: came from us investment bank.

Keep in mind 1/2 of all GS employees are VP, and they can range from L4 to L7 even. So “most” VPs come in a super wide range, and “most” will not be qualified to join a top tech company.

Associates can manage people at Goldman Sachs?

yep

Airbnb airb0b Sep 28, 2019

Most likely L4/5 at tech companies. Your research is incorrect. And it’s not just about YOE. Running a tech team at a bank is nothing like running a tech team in a real tech company. Your definition of “highly skilled” at GS is also not the same as what is considered highly skilled in tech. So it’s unlikely anyone will give you L6/M1.

I doubt you current GS creds are going matter much at a top tier tech company. Aim for L5 but don't be surprised if they offer you L4.

L3, take it

I think M1 at apple is equivalent to ICT4. So M1 should be doable
