The largest tech employers, employing the most number of engineers in NYC are approximately: Bloomberg at 8000 Google at about 4000 Amazon about 3000 Meta about 1000? I feel like most of those 100k+ layoffs happened in Seattle and Bay Area markets, especially since Bloomberg didn't layoff in NYC, it didn't really affect NYC's tech market as harshly as it affected the west coast. Layoffs from Spotify, Etsy were too small to affect the market. Goldman Sachs had massive layoffs but they were absorbed by JP Morgan hiring. Just a guess, but open to any corrections if my thought process is inaccurate.
Yup. Tech is actually a pretty small industry comparatively speaking in NYC. Some people in NYC have obviously been impacted, but the city has multiple other major industries to support it, so the entire economy isn’t impacted like it is in SF/Seattle when just tech does layoffs.
JPM is hiring a lot recently. They seem to pick up people opportunistically when they see the market has overcorrected. They see blood and they buy. See: First Republic
Finance is hiring so that makes sense. Last year was a good year in finance
I’m not there anymore. I assume all roles but I only notice SWE. I would favor hedge funds over banks for more exciting work
755 of the around 1,500 employees laid off at Spotify were based in New York, according to a notice filed with the state’s department of labor. Spotify has a total of 3,693 employees based in New York, per the notice, meaning 20% of staff there got cut in the latest round of layoffs.
This post mainly focuses on software engineers, it's unclear how many of those were engineers.
Hi idSW54, I am interested in bloomberg london but haven't found any openings for the last 6 months. Has bloomberg stopped hiring ?? Can you please tell. Thank you
Banks are hiring
Which ones?
all
I genuinely don’t think BBG has ever laid off engineers. They flex this to us in exchange for pay stagnation at senior levels lol
They still affect NYC market as interviews are still remote. So you are competing with talent across the USA.
Is JPM good?
