How is the work and tech stack at booking.com? The manager told me that they are moving away from Perl, but is that true? And if it is only Perl, do you feel you are gaining good experience generally?
It’s true. Vast majority of new systems are Java. We also have a few NodeJS, Golang and Python systems
The company has a diversity of platforms and offerings aren’t universal so there are teams using Java and many modern codebases but they tend to be newer than the core product which is 17+ years old
Run away
Yes, we are moving away from Perl and replatforming the monolith. If you are senior or above exciting time to join booking!!! However just keep in mind that it’s multi year exercise it will take sometime to see the actual change. Initially six month to year more about planning and evaluation.
Hi. Can you state the stats on perl migration now.
We're writing more Perl codes everyday so I don't think we're moving away from it any time soon. About 80% of our code base is Perl I think. You can't learn much from Perl, however you would appreciate other languages more.

How Perl and good experience can exist in the same sentence is beyond me.
