Has anyone transitioned from tech to philanthropy or non-profit foundations for better WLB and more meaning/purpose? If so, did you regret it? Feeling really burnt out in tech (likely exacerbated due to working at Cruise, which is another story)— I want to do something that directly contributes to the “greater” good and also have better WLB. FEARS: harder to get back into tech if I regret, significantly lower TC, tech skills atrophy, limited growth opportunities and marketability. Any thoughts or advice are appreciated. Thanks so much!!! Please don’t be THAT tech bro who asks about TC.
You might get frustrated working at a nontech company because they will definitely not be using best practices and are often resistant and reluctant to change processes
This is one of my fears as well. And the hierarchy and bureaucracy and politics. Though some of these happen in tech too obvs.
I would recommend joining school/college system. Every big consulting company has social/education practice focusing on processes, technology etc. for school systems.
Healthcare may be a good middle ground. Tends to be older age demographic, and rigorous clinical trials mean things take time. I have also seen people joining startups for sustainable [x - farming, energy, insert whatever is applicable]. Personally my goal is to take a year sabbatical at some point to take a year contract at a NGO (World Bank, UNESCO, etc) as my part of giving back.
This is great advice. Thanks!
We’re trying to build the intersection of the two at CZI. Definitely interesting in how to bring the two cultures together into strong teams.
CZI is def a very interesting place. Have you guys found it difficult to bridge the two fields?
TC ?
