How many of you engineers actively network at work? (As opposed to passively / organically where you get to know people outside your team by working with them on a project etc). Do you find that being well networked increases promo chances / career development? Or are they mostly a function of how good you are technically?
Best way to get promoted as always.
General approach? Coffee chats and follow up emails like they teach you in networking 101 or something more natural like lunch / interest groups? I find it a bit weird to just go talk to people who I haven’t really met before for no reason at all.
When everybody knows you it’s really easy to get promo feedback. People default to saying good things unless if they have evidence otherwise. Join one of those event planning groups. Hosts are the center of the party.
General networking won’t help a promo. They will need to give solid feedback based on projects Networking, however, is great to learn about different ways to solve problems. And get a mentor, at least one, to help you navigate orgs and career
