Telecommuting at Google

What’s up with the anti-telecommuting policy at Google? Especially for field roles. Seems like they would miss out on quality talent by not offering work from home options like some of their competitors. Talked to a recruiter about a TAM job and she was adamant that being in the office was required.

I think this is a way to discourage older engineers with families. The ones that can't get their kids in or afford the $5000/mo day care. The younger folks (or H1Bs) without kids would rather code-monkey on campus with all the "perks" than go back home to a dinky shared apartment on Castro. Win-win for Goog.

You can probably work out a deal with your manager about wfh twice a week, but face time is important if you're part of any bigger projects requiring multi team cooperation.
