Interviewing with Tesla in Fremont - at last stages of the interview process. Please share your thoughts about the company, it's culture and compensation. I'm currently in Semiconductor industry and the move would be first step towards my long term goal of working in different industries. The role is interesting, no doubt and the brand name would be a great addition to resume as well but it's it worth taking a paycut?
In terms of work culture, our perks are pretty dry and sometimes you'll be putting in lengthy hours here. No free food.
They haven't discussed the compensation yet but what should be the approximate numbers for someone with 6 years of experience and Masters degree. The role is for a Program Manager position. Can you give me a breakdown of salary structure: Base, Yearly Bonus and RSUs, Joining Bonus and RSUs
Thanks for the info. They haven't discussed the compensation yet but what should be the approximate numbers for someone with 6 years of experience and Masters degree. Don't expect joining bonus and rsu's or any sort of bonus but you'll definitely get a competitive base salary+rsu's. I don't think you'll get a pay cut if you consider the rsu's. What type of PM role is it, NPI? There's a difference in salary between EPM and other PMs
Yes, NPI. 1. Is there a difference between project manager and Program Manager at Tesla. 2. How is the NPI work at Tesla and future prospect? Is NPI respected - I mean like in SW companies, ppl who code are treated really well. 3. What base and RSUs can I expect with MS+6 years experience in big corporations around US
Yes big difference in scope and responsibility between project and program manager. Future prospects at tesla are great anywhere, including NPI, as long as you're very committed and hard working. It's a full meritocracy, nobody cares about your title. People will respect you if you do good work, not based on the title.
As for the last question I really have no idea what kind of offers they're giving out these days but whatever your market value is, you should be able to achieve
Okay, so they offered $110K and 50K RSUs for Project Manager position. No yearly bonus and no signing bonus. This is way less, like 15-20% less than what I'm currently making and 40% less than my other offer. These are first pass numbers and I can negotiate up from here but don't know if they'll be able to match my current compensation or come anywhere close to other offer. Thoughts please?
I'm going to assume that your other offer is with a FANG company, which would help explain why it's so much better. Although with that said, I get the impression that Tesla is a company that has a bit of a reputation for paying very poorly as compared to other companies in the area. It's as though it can afford to be miserly with compensation because there are plenty of people who will want to work there anyway. Personally, I'd take the (MUCH) better offer, as it's likely to be from a company with strong brand name (hence good for your resume), and I very much doubt that Tesla will revise their offer up 40%. I'm happy to be proved wrong though.
What is FANG?
You can make 40% more at another company? Then why would you even consider Tesla? They are in trouble this week for paying their foreign workers below minimum wage. Other than the brand name, do you see any other benefit to your resume? Getting a break at a higher role or different career path? Otherwise, why would you do it?
A different career path - right now I'm in Semiconductor. I'm in operations/Quality so probably there is a different route to getting out of the semiconductor industry and become a generalist rather than take 40% financial hit going to Tesla. Thoughts?
Yup, you're right on the money. It will be hard to catch up on the salary if you take the hit now. You will have to jump 2-3 jobs to get on par, which means 6-8 years.
Exactly. Thanks for bringing that up.

Well it varies a bit based on which org you are in. In general you'll be working with the brightest group of people. Compensation is generally lower than some of the top employers in the valley. Not sure what it's like in the semiconductor side, but hard for me to believe we'll be offering a paycut from Lam Research unless you are coming into a completely different role/demotion.
