https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-04/tesla-ordered-to-pay-137-million-for-harboring-workplace-racism I posted Tesla's response in a comment. Any Tesla folks care to share Tesla's side of the story?
Guess they’re going to move to Texas faster after this one.
Who called it? This guy.
Is it still "alleged" if they are already found guilty?
Tesla is appealing.
Excerpt from Tesla's official statement https://www.tesla.com/blog/regarding-todays-jury-verdict?redirect=no "Mr. Diaz worked as an elevator operator at the Fremont factory for nine months, from June 2015 to March 2016. In addition to Mr. Diaz, three other witnesses testified at trial that they regularly heard racial slurs (including the n-word) on the Fremont factory floor. They agreed that most of the time they thought the language was used in a “friendly” manner and usually by African-American colleagues. Even though Mr. Diaz now complains about racial harassment at Fremont, at the time he said he was being harassed, he recommended to his son and daughter – while they were all living together in the same home – that they work at Tesla with him."
Is this really an official statement from Tesla? Are the PR/HR teams ok? “They agreed most of time time they thought the language was used in a friendly manner and usually by African American colleagues” LOL Should of added “The swastikas we found painted on employee property were used usually in a friendly manner by Nazi sympathizer colleagues”
Oh come on dude, black people call each other the n-word all the time in a friendly manner. It's a cultural thing.
Wait who gets $137 million? Does he get all of it or it’s donated to diversity causes?
He and his lawyers.
He probably won’t see a dime. Tesla will appeal until his death just like tobacco, big oil and big pharma
Seems like a money grab… with these kind of incentives I’d expect to see a lot more lawsuits… woke Californians are angling to put themselves out of jobs
If it was a white or maybe Asian person you’d be like “yes, good workers are fighting for their rights against evil companies”
Yes just look at the post from that dude who wants his director fired because he used the phrase “ch*nks in my armor” and he’s Asian and took offense…
Our legal system is fundamentally broken. This guy got 100x more money for allegedly hearing and seeing the n word a few times than most people get for literally being killed on the job.
Yeah makes zero sense
That’s how the system works. The punitive damages are always excessive to serve as a detriment to any future offenders
Hiring woke snowflakes is a threat to the bottom line.
So…not wanting to be called racial slurs almost daily means you’re a woke snowflake?
You can be fined $137 million for having some of your employees say words from rap songs between each other? Only in California! The verdict makes no sense. First of all, these punitive damages awarded by the jurors are never upheld. The whole thing will likely be appealed, and brought down like 100x, if not more. I don't understand why he's owed anything if none of these were even directed at him.
White people called black people the N word for centuries…maybe give black people a few years to figure it out when used among themselves? Also no one uses the “hard R”…that’s only white people.
So it's okay to use if you're a certain color and have certain pronunciation? But not otherwise?
That is hardly the tip of the iceberg…sooo many incidents of black people being called the N word at the Fremont factory, so many complaints and Tesla (even Elon Musk) did absolutely nothing. In fact Musk’s email told them to have “thicker skin”.
What are they supposed to do? It's not legal to not hire people who use those words.
What is Tesla supposed to do? Maybe act on complaints once they’re investigated and found to be legitimate? I don’t know. If there’s rampant harassment going on at a company, what do you think should happen?
