I wrote about my story in a different thread but felt compelled to post since my memories came back strong. I am non-tech and the companies I worked for were "normalish" companies, think 3M, Toyota, Johnson & Johnson. After discovering Blind and learning the ins and outs of interviewing (had no idea about the 6 rounds of interviews) and learning about TC, I was lucky to join Uber in March for a niche non-tech role. Even better, the RSU grant was based on the super low March price. Once my wife and I started learning about RSUs and the benefits, we daydreamed about our future (my TC went from 130 to about 200 - would be around 250 with stock appreciation today). Then the pandemic hit and I got laid off 2 months later in May. My wife cried everyday for a week and we also have a newborn. I kept putting on a brave face telling her things will be okay and I'll find another job at a tech company but I myself never once believed it deep down. I was crushed at losing the RSUs because I thought we could pay off our house after they vested in 4 years. Fast forward to August, I was able to land a similar role at Airbnb. After the IPO, my RSU grant also exploded. I went from the darkest period of my life to again feeling hopeful for the future. My TC today is almost 300k, a number I never thought I would ever reach (granted it will drop heavily after year 4). The work is difficult, I bust my ass every day, but so thankful that I got a new job during the pandemic, so thankful I joined a great team and company, and no matter how stressed I get in my current role due to the pressure, it will never be as bad as that week my wife cried every minute of every day.
Congrats! Keep it up!
Congrats on the job. Update us after 6 months when lockdown is lifted and everyone dumps their shares
What's your role, if I may ask?
Finance/treasury/accounting
Digging up a dead one, but just wanted to mention we get RSUs at 3M, too. :) Or options, if you elect, but it only makes sense if you're planning to hang around for a loooooooooonnng time.
What makes you think that. I feel it other way. He knows his game
