One key factor is the changing landscape of compensation packages. Historically, these big tech firms were known for their lucrative offers, but recent data suggests a shift. According to levels.fyi, which collects self-reported data, the average total compensation packages at these companies have seen a noticeable decline. For instance, an entry-level software engineer at Google in 2021 could expect a total compensation of around $189,000, but recent reports indicate a decrease in these figures. This trend is not isolated to Google; similar patterns are observed across other big tech firms. Beyond compensation, the 'distinguishment' or prestige that used to come with working at such companies seems to be waning. In the past, having a big tech name on your resume could open doors and set you apart. Now, it appears the market is saturated with candidates boasting similar experiences. This change is happening even though the interview processes at these companies have become more rigorous and challenging than ever. The job market and the tech industry are evolving. With the rise of many promising startups and mid-sized tech companies offering competitive packages, innovative work, and a better work-life balance, the allure of big tech names isn't what it once was. it's a classic pattern investment bankers used to earn big bucks in the 90s. Since then, investment banking salaries have been in decline. And the 'prestige' has increased. Everyone smart long since moved to hedge funds. Same is true of big tech. Smart folks have moved to crypto or AI companies. Prestige has gone up at FAANG but salaries have gone down

So what you’re saying is that FAANG is paying less money while increasing DEI hires? As someone that would fit DEI this doesn’t surprise me at all. Not to mention that FAANG is everywhere now. Google has an office in Ann Arbor, MI. They would be insane to offer Bay Area salaries to work in Ann Arbor. So I imagine that the average compensation packages are including LCOL. What’s the average if you compare it to the same offices and positions from the year that it’s being compared to?
CS market is too saturated at the entry level. I tell college students to get out of CS because ultimately less supply is better for everyone else in the industry.
Google was prestigious pre-2010 when they were building impressive things. Not really anymore.
