Is the 20% rule real? If so, do you use that perk? If so, how did you use that 20%? Can use use that for “self-education” and side projects, etc? Comment below. 👇 https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/16/google-20-percent-rule-shows-exactly-how-much-time-you-should-spend-learning-new-skills.html #google #tech
Who (team, role, location, etc) gets to actually use it?
It’s pretty informal, but if you are doing your job correctly nobody is going to stop you from spending 20% time on whatever you want. Most people probably spend much less than 20% of their time on it though
Is leetcoding a side project?
When I last interviewed, I got the impression noone actually has the time to use this 20% benefit. I believe I was told it still had to have manager's approval.
In reality it’s the 120% rule. 🤦♂️
It's real, but yeah in practice it's more like a 120% rule - not because you need to spend the same amount of time on your main job, but because 20% simply isn't enough time to accomplish anything worthwhile so you need to instead spend 40%.
If your company can’t allocate time for their devs to learn more, it’s their loss too
