I’m a BI Engineer with 3 YOE and a BS in CS. My resume is very well written and thought out. I have applied to nearly 60 jobs in the past two months. I haven’t received any updates from 26 of them. I have been rejected without a phone screen by 25 of them. I have had 5 phone screens and then I was ghosted. Ghosted by 3 recruiters after scheduling a phone screen. I have 1 first round interview scheduled. What the hell is going on? Am I the only one? TC 140k #amazon #data
This sounds similar to my experience. I’m up to 250 applications
250??? I’ve done like 25 I’m my life…
You must be easily over 40 @starlight. Probably more.
9 yoe same experience
What is BI?
In this context, I assume they mean Business Intelligence
Yes^, this is more of an Amazon thing, afaik it’s supposed to be a blend of data analyst and SWE
Tbh that's normal even for 2021-2022. 60 jobs is nothing. People apply to that many in a day.

What’s your location? Are you applying for only remote positions?
7 years exp as full stack engineer. Java, spring, react typescript, AWS, etc Same.
Your numbers actually sound pretty good, no? 5 phone screens and 1 interview for 60 direct applies is a decent hit rate. Applying directly to job postings has a very low success rate so it’s about volume of applications. For some additional context here, these direct apply postings typically get hundreds-thousands of applications per post. There are a lot of tools used to filter down this list + a manual process at the end. If you applied to 60 positions this way you probably competed against anywhere between 6,000 and 60,000 candidates so getting responses 5 times is actually quite good. You’ve averaged one application per day for the last two months which is quite low. You want to be sending a few dozen applications per day with that strategy. With your hit rate that could net you several phone screens and an interview or two a week. If you want to try a strategy with a greater time investment but higher return you can try reaching out to recruiters from companies you are interested in directly. Third party recruiters can also come in handy here because you have a very high chance of at least getting an interview for listings they are trying to fill.
Hey can I DM for more specific advice? Because the way you broke down the math makes so much sense to me and gave me a different perspective.
Sure, happy to help. But for full transparency, this is from a interviewers perspective. I haven’t applied to anything since I was a new grad since every role I went to was from friends / company recruiters pulling me in.
Applying to 60 jobs in a day is resume bombing. It’s a strategy that never works. I’ve been laid off since January. 600+ applications. 3 interviews. Up until a few weeks ago I was at least getting courtesy emails from employers telling me they were moving forward with someone else or that the position was closed. Now I’m getting nothing. Hiring typically slows in the summer months. The best time for job-seekers is Q3 and Q1. But the market is dismal even accounting for these normal fluctuations.
I think Q4 is the best for hunting. Lots of posts for start dates in Q1, but everyone is busy with the holidays and such.
What's going on is you ONLY have 3 YOE experience. I'm guessing you are also asking for more than your current 140k which isn't helping in the current market.
Exactly what I was thinking. Companies aren't wanting to pay as much anymore in tech especially if you don't have at least several years of experience. I think those days are over.
You don’t ask for a salary when you apply to jobs usually
