Saw this on LinkedIn. Copypasta: -Telegram and Signal, privacy-first comms apps, are #1 and #2 on the app stores currently, knocking out WhatsApp. A global trend. -At one point today, Newsmax and OANN apps (“alternative” news networks) were outpacing CNN in the stores. -Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey frantically backpedaling on company’s censorship against conservatives, in face of racketeering and antitrust actions. www.twitter.com/jack. -Business Insider reports Facebook and Twitter have lost $51 billion in valuation since beginning to deplatform en masse. -MeWe, a “free speech and data privacy first” Facebook competitor, has appeared out of the blue in the “Top 50” charts. -Gab released the following data 60 seconds ago. Weekly metrics: 2.3 million new users 55 million visits 100 million page views They have also released a competing livestreaming service, and a ROKU/Fire Stick product. Private browser and email services to compete w Chrome and GMAIL. They also report they are seeing thousands of resumes pouring in from SV talent. -Parler is still down. -“Free speech-enabling” reddit clone, “.win” is climbing the Alexa rankings. Top 300 trafficked website in the US last week; 200 this week. Now top 1,000 in Australia.
It would be interesting to how these companies handle the scale and growth. With great number of users, comes great responsibility :)
Gab building on prem. No trusting AWS after what happened to Parler...
Good for them. It's important to note that scaling on prem will have its limitations.
This either ends with status quo (fb stays as the leader) or with a single of those apps winning and doing similar stuff than fb (ads, selling data, subscription) to survive. In the long run people converge in one single place for convince. And scale is very expensive so fsteadybsourcr of funding is required. You can't base a social network or comm system oout of donations. see the 300 M a year Lyft pays Amazon for their servers
Yes, even if one of them does sell out competition is still good. Maybe in the future people won’t have to worry about their leaders being systemically banned from the internet.
Well I considered that people like Hitler should have been banned from any platform that spread his message.. Same as trump inciting riots This is up to government to stablish the line of what to ban or not. Until then companies does what they think is their best What you should be demanding is for a clear law on free speech so any companies could adhere. Swapping apps will just bring you to the same place eventually
I'm honestly curious as to how apps like signal make money, or at least pay for infrastructure costs. Making their product free isn't really sustainable if they want to scale to billions of users
Targeted ads😂
Subs?
If it's on social media, it must be true
Users should ditch LinkedIn and come to Blind
100 million page views per week might sound like a lot, but that's 165 hits per second .. probably 4x that much during peak hours ? Most of those would be cached so .. that doesn't seem too hard. Curious about posts per day though. I'm skeptical about thousands of resumes from sv talent, how many people want gab on their resume ?
I’m excited to see what gab does in the future.
