I'm new here, ok? But I get the vibe that ppl here do not care what they do as long as they get the good hourly rate. How to work less, how to get more. But no one thinks about the _content_ of the work! Is it just what Blind is or people actually live like that? On a spectrum between a cashier at Wendy's to a street artist, how much do you consider time at the job "wasted"? Wake up sheeple. You are spending your life there, it's not only money/wlb. #software #swe #wlb #life
TC?
Think about managers and directors . What do they do for the paycheck. Strategize my ass
Because Argonne pays shit? I’d clean toilets if you pay me 1 million/day. Money is important.
STFU
Can you elaborate
Blind is a cult and our cult is : “In Money We Trust”.
I work solely for the purpose of earning money to sustain myself, so naturally, obtaining the highest paying job is crucial to me, as it is for many people on Blind who are fortunate to secure such lucrative salaries.
I spent the first decade of my career at LLNL and felt similar to you OP. Then, I had kids and my priorities shifted completely. I still enjoy my work, but I want my kids to have opportunities that are not possible with what the DOE pays. (eg being able to afford to have a stay-at-home parent, aggressive retirement and college savings, etc) Went from making $161k a few years ago for the DOE to $613k this past year, and on track for $850k in 2024. All things being equal, I'd love to go back to some of the really meaningful defense work I was doing before instead of working on ads, but things are far from equal and I have a family to consider now.
Having kids makes you truly appreciate the fact that TC is the only thing that matters. "Meaningful work" is only a scam to justify paying lower TC.
Thanks @meta, it makes sense. I do feel like having a parent who enjoys what they do is also important. Once a young professor (different country) told us that he had a high earning friend in tech. Their kids go to the same school and were asked to tell what their father does. The prof's child said "my father makes satellites and sends them to space". The swe's kid said his dad is a sysadmin. So I guess it is about prestige, just a different kind:)
Hourly rate? The real coasters are exempt. It's about Prestige, though.
So you're saying the prestige for most people is money, not meaningful work?
@ANL: You're new here so I'll explain it for you. On Blind, there are a ton of people who have a very particular idea of "prestige" that seems to revolve around people in their non-US hometown recognizing the employer's name, so "prestige" for them is mostly megacap international brands. Places like the National Labs, elite hedge funds, etc aren't prestigious in their eyes because nobody from their hometown will look at them with awe when they hear where they work.
