English is not my first language, so i apologize in advance for grammar errors. A family member of mine works in salesforce Germany. Is work life seems to be pretty chill, takes lots of vacation and I have never seen him work past 3PM. Last year, salesforce had a layoff in Germany. swiftly after, a work council was created to protect tenured employees. Same with my cousin that work in France. He takes sick days every other week and i never seen him work past 2PM. I don’t think he ever worries about being fired. Plus I heard the Work Council in France is even more ridiculous than Germany. My first job in tech was in the aerospace industry. My interview was just a simple one hour behavioral interview and i was hired. I worked 8AM to 4PM mon-wed and three to four hours on thursday and friday. Still manage to exceed expection and got promoted in a year. The work culture was quite chill. The company was not allowed to hire non US citizen due to security clearance. My experince is completly different any time i dealt with a company that utilize migrant workers. Literally starting from the interview process. I laughed the first time i was ever asked a leetcode question. I thought my interviewer was joking. How much impact does migrants worker in tech have on the US work culture?
What do any of the things you pointed out (work life balance, job security) have anything to do with immigrants?
Asking job applicants crazy leetcode questions is only sustainable if you can access unlimited job applicants. Apply to any job restricted to US citizens, and see if they will ask you stupid leetcode questions. Let's take the sales force, for example. The division my family members were working at was axed entirely. Everybody in that division is allowed to hang around for four months, and they can choose any open role in the sales force in Germany. If this would have happened in the US, every body in that division would have been laid off. The only reason that could happen is that hiring must go through the work councils.
But don’t they also get paid terribly in Germany? In the U.S. it’s trivial to make 200-300k, that would be really hard in Europe. We pay the price of (lack of) job security for good money.
What you just described is exactly why the EU is in bad shape today. Chinese EV companies are about to destroy their car industry. The success of the US is built upon global talents. SO, I will continue asking LeetCode hard in any interview to filter out lazy slackers who refuses to do any preparation.
I prefer to work in the EU than in China. I bet the Chinese make lots of great things, but I don't want the US or Germany to ever be like China.
"Lazy slackers". Um, how about adults with real life commitments? Leetcode don't pay bills bro.
Dey tuk r jerbs!!
These same visa holders are in EU also and they're appreciative of eu regulations. USA doesn't regulate as much so it's a resultant of policies and not visa workers.
Yap, I was wondering the same thing. I know Netherlands brings in many visa workers but I don’t think they have the hyper competitive toxic hustle work culture that proliferate the US
Dont cry that your entitled a** does not get jobs where you get paid for 5 days of work but work only 2 days. You could work a part time job if that's your dream And keep btchin about visa workers. The system isn't changing anytime soon. All you can really do is whine on anonymous platform rofl
I can get a job easily. I don't have trouble getting jobs. I got a senior software engineering role at Microsoft without solving a single leetcode question. I got an offer from Oracle and Amazon also. I wouldn't say I like working with desperate, toxic, hyper hyper-competitive people because of the environment they create. I like environment where I could work a couple of days a week and still exceed expectations.
Tech used to be fun, the bay area used to be a chill place, until the Leetcode era.
I’m not sure what culture you are taking about but I work only few hours per week but get paid $300k. So I’ll take US over Germany any day.
That can quickly change when a hyper-competitive leetcode grinder joins your team. You are one reorg away from losing a great work life balance.
lol, This is the result of capitalism. Migrant workers is just one of many dozen problems created by the capitalism. Even if the H1B disappear in a split second, you will realize there are bigger problems created by capitalism.
Think for a second, if hardworking, talented people are removed then they will lose to other companies/countries that hire them. It will take time but that will happen eventually. US has no other option. It has always happened in history.
The US is a leader in the aerospace industry. The aerospace industry has export control restrictions, so they are mostly limited to hiring US citizens only. If what you are saying is true, then a startup with access to global talent would have disrupted the aerospace industry. Software Engineer is the only profession that generates trillions of dollars in value, and software engineers are still disposable. Many practices in the tech industry, like layoffs, pip quotas, lack of diversity, etc, are only sustainable because the tech industry has access to a 50-70k supply of engineers yearly.
Aerospace industry is difficult to distrust because of hardware, security aspects, doing things in stealth mode in which US already has a leverage. Being a developed country after world war it has been way ahead in its defense sector than any other country. Also US grabs talented folks from other countries too in this sector. Information was not so freely available. Now due to internet and media things have changed. Now it has become easier for other countries as well. Also lot of countries don’t invest in defense as much as US as they have other problems. If these aero, defense sectors are opened up, I mean really opened up, I am pretty sure Immigrants would kill in that domain too. It has been leader due to information hiding. Also look at SpaceX. It has started hiring Immigrants and it has achieved so much. A startup can’t compete first of all due to the security restrictions. The entry barrier is very high. If that becomes opened up then you will see how real talented people can fight fairly. Any job is disposable. I agree there is a surplus because that’s where immigrants are allowed.
If I had a button I would cancel all h1b visas and send them home but I really think the crappy work culture is a product of capitalism and not the visa people lol
