I work in tech. But I stay 2 hours away from NY in Connecticut. Mate, the life people have here is something to die for. My tech friends and multiple neighbors (same age, same ethnicity) come from different worlds. Tech friends: Constantly worried about jobs, always studying, talking about career, losing hair, ordering takeouts, no friends, taking courses online, reading tech blogs/books, trying for promo but failing, working 9-9, work for prestige. HH TC 400k + 200k Neighbors: Cooking everyday, all work at no name companies, work 5 hours a week, play with kids in the afternoon, watch TV, mow the lawn, go for activities every evening, large social circle, take a walk, get fresh groceries 2x a week, invite friends over often, don't miss any city event, workout everyday, talk to family everyday. HH TC 150k + 100k I am currently living the former life but I want the latter. I didn't even realize how much everyday stress I was going through and how much life I was missing until I moved to Connecticut. Anyone resonates? How do I achieve this life?
Connecticut to Chelsea Google office is a bad commute?
Yes. It is. This ain't Asia with high speed trains.
I would much rather work in tech than in healthcare or public service any day… what kind of jobs do your neighbors have because the majority of careers are stressful…
Boring plain white collar job where you do nothing. Many such jobs exist
But then you have to work from an office. Ew.
I want later too. All that extra money ain’t worth if it means losing your precious time and peace of mind.
You should compare to ppl in finance -- Living in CT, wake up 6:30AM every day to commute 1.5 hours to Manhattan. Also working with stress and for prestigious name. Lower TC than Tech. You may feel happier thinking in this way.
Not lower tc than tech
Doesn't Cidatel pay like a $500k at 5 yoe?
Losing your hair sounds hard. Is this particular to tech? I thought it's just genetic for everyone
My feeling is that kind of life will cause another kind of unhappiness for ambitious folks. I think a better way to live life is be ambitious for your own goals. Work 60-70 hours on your own product building something you care about and want to create real value and gain skills
Totally agree ! You will miss the energy that empowers you
Social life isn’t dependent on money and I think you underestimate how hard and difficult those other jobs can be. Work from home isn’t even an option and vacation is not as generous. The dei culture you guys hate at tech is something that keeps a lot of racist people at an arms length but that isn’t the case in a blue collar environment. You gotta take the racist jokes and jab from time to time and it’s not fun if you ain’t white or black. Thats right. Black people actually have some weight since they are politically active unlike other minorities.
What jobs/fields can bring 150k or 100k in non-technical and require only 5h a week?
Everyone's stressed about their jobs. Tech folks are just a bit too greedy (no offense to anyone), most only see $. Happiness is a mindset, not a goal.
If you have ‘happiness as a mindset’ at Amazon and log in 40 hours a week, you will eventually get pipped, full stop. You may make it work for 3-4 months here and there, but eventually the ax will fall (after a manager or skip or team change). That’s simply not true for public sector jobs, or jobs at some smaller companies. Have worked in both and plenty of people out in 40 hours or less.
Amazon, the place where people go to get tied by them golden cuffs.
