Yes, the process should be straight forward and not repressive. Vetting for health, smuggling or people trying to escape criminal prosecution is not opposed to “open borders” immigration policy. If immigration was just a simple process of declaring if you are looking for work or whatnot and a health verification then it would be a lot easier to notice people trying to slip through the cracks since people who just want seasonal work or to be with their family or start a life here would come in through normal channels. Immigration policy as it stands is just to keep documented and undocumented immigrants as vulnerable workers who are afraid risking their immigration status or being deported respectively. Neither party wants to get rid of undocumented labor or have open borders - they want a lever to be able to manage groups of workers. Trump, for example, is supported by the two industries that hire the most undocumented workers - they both want border security but also for laws that allow seasonal workers to be delivered directly to their industries like indentured servants.

Except that the DNC steadily swung to the right for the three decades prior and the leadership of the party are still Clintonite neoliberals. The population in the US has swung left, the DNC candidates are mostly just opportunistically trying to pander to increasingly confident left-of-liberal sentiment. Sanders has been consistent, but Harris, Booker, Beto etc all came from a Clinton-Obama model of politics and are trying to adjust (at least for the primaries... they’d probably swing back to the center in the general election)

Native Americans didn't have borders. That may have been a bad idea given that they were overrun. Now they have borders after the federal government allocated it to them.
