Thinking about moving from bay area

I'm thinking about moving to NY but I'm worried that it will stunt my career growth as someone in tech. I don't particularly like the bay area besides the weather, however it is very nice having most of the top companies headquartered nearby. Would love to hear from other people in tech who moved from the bay to NYC about their thought process and how they are liking it.

The ratio of Uhauls Out/In the Bay is about $2000/$1 right now. You are not alone. Surely smaller businesses across the fruited plain are sensing this.

Where did you find the Uhaul ratio?

I wish I could find it fast. A group channel discussion cited it about 2 weeks ago. I’ll keep looking

Here is one story that covered it, but it’s now the one that my group was talking about: https://m.sfgate.com/expensive-san-francisco/article/U-Haul-San-Francisco-Bay-Area-prices-shortage-12617855.php

I have made the decision to move from SF to Seattle last year. My 2 cents: 1. I lived in pacific northwest my entire life but it was still hard getting adjusted to rain again. 2. work life balance will go up, not because you work less, but you waste less time commuting unless your work is in sf and you live right beside it. 3. I still think about my career stagnation as a consequence of not living near primary tech hub but i dont think this matters if you are willing to think flexible about your future plans. I made the decision to move because I was not happy living in SF. Do what your heart says now and revisit after few years if you think cons outweigh the pros.

At which level did your career stuck at?

Bay area is a shit hole for young people. You pay rent exceeding seattle luxurious apartments located in downtown and yet still live in the sub. Pretty much the worst of all combined. Moving to NY seems to be the optimal choice for people in their 20s, just my 2cents. Simply bc better social life and perks of livinf in a big city justifies the rent expense.

Note that bay area rent is comparable to nyc now. If not more expensive.

Where do people think your career gets stunted and dies if you're not in SF? I've worked in Wisconsin and NYC before and those didn't "stunt" my growth.

Too many people drinking the Silicon Valley koolaid. Careers grow just fine everywhere else if you are a good dev.

Back in the hardware rules all days (i.e. 90s, early to mid 2000s), you pretty much have to be in the south bay working for a hardware company (semiconductor, to be precise) to be counted as "good". Yup, those days hardware guys make 20% more and CS are for losers who can't get into EE. Now with software and services making most of the money, it is not the same. I predict in 10 years seattle will be more expensive and higher income than SF Bay. So, feel free to move out without worrying about stunted growth, move out and move soon.

NY has plenty of companies, both public and private, that will help continue the momentum of your career. You'll be fine.
