Thinking about moving from tech to somewhere like Boeing, thoughts?

My degree is in electrical engineering and I don’t feel very fulfilled as a software engineer. I have always had a love for airplanes and my focus in my degree was in control systems, and I learned a lot about fly by wire systems. It would feel so cool again to work on something so amazing rather than something that people don’t see like cloud infrastructure. Is the grass greener or am I overthinking this? I want to make a career change but not sure. #boeing

You'll take a big TC hit

Expedia Group Gt2DChoppa OP Jan 6, 2021

That part I do realize

Anduril rMrn40 Feb 18, 2021

Not if you come to Anduril - comp competitive with big tech

Boeing PqUt01 Jan 6, 2021

Don’t do it. Everybody is trying to leave Boeing even on stable defense side. The only case I would advise to join at the moment is if you really need a mental break and don’t need the TC whatsoever.

Even if they are building a super cool product? I don’t see another company where you can build something so cool as airplanes

Boeing PqUt01 Jan 6, 2021

To each person it might be different. I’ve worked on some objectively pretty cool things that can sound impressive to strangers but it gets old. I find the scope of the work and how slow it is frustrating because even if you have grand ideas you’d like to implement it’s rare to be able to follow through with them

Do it man, aviation isn’t going anywhere. If you love it go for it. Money will always be there, satisfaction won’t

Don't go to Boeing. Go anywhere else but Boeing. Gulfstream, Northrop, Raytheon, etc

Amazon cuamzn Jan 6, 2021

Used to work at Gulfstream, and we had a lot of dissatisfied former Boeing employees that were happier at Gulfstream. Its based in Savanah with super low CoL, and beautiful downtown.

Raytheon ihateLC Jan 6, 2021

Raytheon is the slowest company in the world, don’t come here unless you don’t care about work at all

Evolve! Your professional interests, personal liabilities, and passions will not remain the same. I loved teaching but not it’s compensation. So did adjunct faculty gigs for a couple of years and moved on. Loved statistics and data, worked on a few projects using the skills and moved on. You will get bored with that passion unless u r able to monetize it.

Started alright, but turned into the worst advice ever, and not even on point at all.

If you want to check a couple of cool cutting edge aviation companies that are looking for engineers, check out Embraer and Aerion. Both are in the executive Jet business in Melbourne, Florida.

Why not build your own experimental airplane?

Most people just goes as SDE for higher TC, though they have different interest. I would highly encourage you to pursue something that you like. I'm not sure how old you are, let's say you are in 30's, when you are in your 50s you will definitely regret your decision and won't be a good time to change careers. I'm not saying you need to take a big hit in TC, do plan which works for you. When you compare high TC with passion, higher TC always wins when you ask your 🧠, however, ask your ❤️ what you really want to do. Good luck for your career. Note: SDE moved to non-tech role to follow passion.
