It is no secret that Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram are losing users, although they monetize better over time with better algorithms and pushing the limits of privacy. The competitions is getting fierce - Snapchat, Signal, Telegram, Tiktok, Parler etc. are popular alternatives. Each country has their own local messaging app, forum and social media site as well, and now governments are encouraging them. The current US and EU governments are not a big fan of monopolies, and they would like to have a less strong FB network. AR/VR etc. bets are not proven to be game changing yet. The most successful FB products, Pytorch and Prophet etc. are open-sourced and monetized by Amazon and Google. Facebook has missed the enterprise software boat and now data centers are just OPEX to them, while they could have been selling compute, networking infrastructure, or computer vision algorithms. Given all, are you negative about FB's future? It provides generous RSUs for the top performers, but does it worry you that those RSUs will be eroding in value and now you are thinking of other tech companies that are better positioned for the future with more stock increase potential?
What does a typical comp package look like for an SDE? How much stock and what’s the vesting schedule
E5: 600 to 800K rsu over 4 years
Can’t take this post seriously when you mention parler as a serious threat
You know 40% of the people of the world's largest economy are conservatives? Get out of your Silicon Valley bubble.
Parler actually bans liberals and even conservative moderates who disagree with conspiracy theories. It certainly wouldn't appeal to most conservatives.
Clearly, you read the wrong type of news. I suggest you to watch Jim Cramer Mad money channel. In term of ad dollar spent, fb is still the only place to go. Google, for years, struggle with login user on google search for targeted ads. All those messenger app you mentions, they just 🔥 💰.
Google monetizing open source products through enterprise sales is a joke compared with Amazon and Microsoft. Well, Google’s enterprise solution is a joke. Google Ads and personal use app are great but it faces the same user tracking controversies and data exchange across products as Facebook, it is just less noticed. You think the data exchange between Facebook and WhatsApp is a problem? How about user data exchange among Gmail, Search, Maps and Ads etc.? Both Google and Facebook get most revenue from the advertising business using user data. Neither is more ethical. Not until your main revenue comes from enterprise or non user tracking should you judge Facebook. The competition landscape looks worse for Facebook but maybe better for Facebook not to be targeted for antitrust or monopoly lawsuits. Google has the market power and dominates the personal life apps, which is naturally a target for antitrust. Google seems to have more risk and ethical and legal challenges.
Product wise I feel Google adds significant value to the world with search, maps, gmail, youtube, etc. I don't feel the same about facebook. (But do about amazon!)
How do you antitrust something when that company does not have pricing power and user services are free?
Have you done your homework? Snapchat user base keep falling yoy. Facebook users are growing up and beyond. Tiktok is a competitor but do people use it to stay updated with real friends? It's FB. People use WhatsApp for staying in touch (video call/text) with friends and family. Signal is a joke. Only time tells why.
It's good to have competition. Do you remember when FB is being killed by Snap circa 2016? And Facebook user base is still growing lol. Look at earning reports.
I still believe facebook's stock will perform better than alphabet's
I didn't realize how easy it was for me to switch to Telegram from Whatsapp. Damn all my friends were already there and it was me (the most techie one) who was still on WhatsApp. Lol.
Tiktok is a real threat.
The future of social media could be run by tiktok. The Chinese govt. will be able to mine everything we do. It sucks to be Zuck now.
It's called competition (not threat)
