I am a US citizen who came from India on an H1B visa over twenty five years ago. In those days, H1B was limited to six years.. No extensions possible. Many of my friends went back at the end of six years, because they viewed H1B as a temporary visa, not an entitlement to work in the US. Most of us did not buy expensive cars.. Definitely not houses, till we got our green cards. But most of us had children here, because that would give them another option when they become adults. The long backlog for green cards for India was caused by the increase in H1B quota to meet Y2K. That really did not require much skilled labor, but the tech industry was short of guys who could program in COBOL. Then the H1 extension became possible, and the backlog kept growing. The H1B visa holders no longer considered themselves temporary workers.. But a sense of entitlement grew. People started buying million dollar homes even when they were not sure that they will get a green card some day. The argument that the US does not have enough tech talent is laughable at this point. Getting laid off is bad.. But that is a risk all of us took when moving to the US. And we had only six years. I wish all of you out there looking for jobs the best. But wanted to throw out my two cents about the sense of entitlement I read in a lot of posts
My guy here expecting things around h1b to not change in 25 years 💀
Like he does when he visits india and sees dosas selling for 100rs . Wait ma… during my time it was just 5rs … and then scratches his head
"My guy here expecting things around h1b to not change in 25 years" It can change. you could even see a complete ban. be careful what you wish for
Did you come in as a international student or a y2k employee?
Student.. IIT grad.. if that helps, but that just helped with getting my foot in door
Interesting. You graduated at Illinois Institute of Technology. And that makes you think that is one step inside the door in US. Hmm. Isn't that entitlement? You declared that you would return/leave after completing your education. But you state that you got your foot in door. What door?
True that. Life will be happy if you consider H1B as a temporary short term work visa. Anything more (like extension, grencard) are more like bonus
Dude you grew old but didn’t grow up.
Yeah yeah and my grandfather used to swim across the river to go to school
+1 my grandfather went to same school.
Yup, and he doesn't like that Gen Z built a bridge. Those entitled fucks.
I wonder why you even want to think about this topic when you already are a citizen
Typical desi/human mentality. Close gates once you get in.
Really want to reconsider if my kids should grow up in this kind of environment : non inclusive behavior, feeling threatened by competition, gun culture, kids with parents who have come here through fraud. After being born here, I’m thinking i should let them grow up in India (in very good schools) and then come back to experience US. Best of both worlds.
Your post shows who is the entitled one.
What’s your TC OP?
Zero
Typical Indian hatred by people(Indians) who got Green Card in early 2000s.
No hatred here.. sorry if you felt that way
Your post would sound very different if you just arrived in the US at a different time. What makes you so different from the rest of us? Beat us by 2 decades by being old?
