Thoughts on Hey, the new email client?

How does it compared to Superhuman? Has anyone tried it out. Personally feel like having to get a new address doesn’t makes sense to me.

Aircall darcy Jul 20, 2020

I signed up for an account but forgot to use it before the trial expired. It seems great, but I’m not willing to pay however much they’re asking for it. Not yet anyway.

VC & Private Equity Firm TAassoc Jul 20, 2020

Did you use it for personal or for work?

Aircall darcy Jul 22, 2020

My intended use was for freelancing, so a bit of both.

Availity qupD77 Jul 20, 2020

I like it. I also got my first name @ so that’s a huge bonus.

VC & Private Equity Firm MurderCrow OP Jul 21, 2020

Huh, well damn I have a very common first name. Probably too late to the punch on that one.

Ok, John Smith

I have been using it for a few weeks now and I'm happy. I'm slowly migrating away from Gmail and this has made me realize the amount of crap I receive and how Google-centric the internet can be. I am definitely in the camp where I will pay to have similar services to what Google offers if it means I'm I'm control of my data. The screener feature is nice but it could be fine tuned. If you receive emails from noreply@example.com that may be classified in different ways (papertrail, feed) then it seems you can only pick one. I also had an issue a few weeks ago where I could not access email from my iOS device but switching to an Android device fixed it. So the apps may need some time to be more stable.

What's the best part of yes? Is it just the spam filtering?

Yelp wGeV81 Jul 21, 2020

I can't comment much about spam filtering - the email alias is new so not enough spammers have gotten a hold of it. The UI is not intuitive so it takes some time to get used to it. I completely forgot there is such thing as "The feed" for a whole week so I missed some emails that I would've liked to see earlier. Same goes for the paper trail. TBH, I probably just paid for it out of novelty and try it out. I also have had a protonmail address for 5 years and rarely use it.

Uber uberdrama Jul 20, 2020

Give the trial a shot. It essentially forces you to frontload the creation of email filters in order to keep your inbox tidy and charges you $99/yr for it. You can clean up your existing mailbox by putting in the same amount of effort and creating filters/unsubscribing and have a relatively equivalent experience. There are some nice features like pooling your attachments, but is that worth a subscription for? You can also claim a new email handle and maybe drop the 1337 suffix from your name, but as soon as you stop paying the annual fee, your email is not accessible. So you'll be stuck paying perpetually. Do the trial and see if it's worth your time.

Interesting to hear you have to keep paying. Pretty fricken high switching cost then once a user is setup

VC & Private Equity Firm TAassoc Jul 20, 2020

Is this a pretty widely known product? Seems like you're racking in the comments here. I thought Yes was pretty under the radar.

Investment Management Firm IVP Jul 20, 2020

Hated the Ux, didn’t bother finish setting up. Didn’t feel that different

eBay dggdx Jul 20, 2020

Gmail launched major updates this week, possibly to contain the buzz from Hey. I dont think Hey has enough utility to pay $100 for something you got for free, especially given that gmail and outlook will catch with same/better features

Investment Management Firm IVP Jul 20, 2020

I use superhuman so missed this update, what did they add?

VC & Private Equity Firm TAassoc Jul 20, 2020

I saw the updates as well. I love how I could automate emails and campaigns through gmail now.

VC & Private Equity Firm TAassoc Jul 20, 2020

I love it, my entire firm is using it along with every tech company/engineer in my network.

VC & Private Equity Firm MurderCrow OP Jul 21, 2020

You're kidding. Not gonna lie, it feels a bit premature to move an entire company to a new paid tool from a startup that might not even exit in a few years.

VC & Private Equity Firm TAassoc Jul 21, 2020

Yea crazy. The tech companies I'm referring to, as well, are massive and have changed the world...

Goldman Sachs pokoloco Jul 21, 2020

First it looks like 👎 UX is odd and the workflows cover only a few personal cases. Pricing is ridiculous. Second this post seems like it was written by the employees. Just check the comment above me. Very much real conversation. Very massive corporation. Much change. Wow. TC or GTFO

Investment Management Firm IVP Jul 21, 2020

Agree Op seems like a spy, TC of gtfo

VC & Private Equity Firm MurderCrow OP Jul 22, 2020

lol what? Every single one of my comments is casting doubt on how good Hey is. I don’t get the hype tbh.

Barclays PLC highflye Jul 21, 2020

What's so good about it

Goldman Sachs pokoloco Jul 21, 2020

They don't allow tracking pixels and read receipts.

Investment Management Firm IVP Jul 21, 2020

But I love read receipts and tracking pixels
