Maybe instead of diversity quotas we should have anti-quotas restricting how many employees can be hired from abroad. Eventually this will make the big tech companies invest in local communities to acquire talent from here ensuring adequate representation of the target groups.
There's literally no reason to bring talent here from India or similar (underpaid) countries given all the companies already have branches there. Especially if everything is remote anyway.
It is not better for the company and arguably it is not even that better for the h1b worker as you're brought here almost as high paid slave who gets deported if fired. No real friends no family here you have no choice to overwork. And it's definitely is not better for the average minority within the US as tech workers are pushing up inflation without contributing directly to the community.
I think you should quit OP. It's a win win win. You'll hang out with your friends, your job will go to someone more deserving from India, and MS will get better talent. WDYT?
That’s called H1b and the quota is 85,000 per year!
I know I've been there but apparently that's not enough. Also there is no per country quota basis.
85000 is way too many. That's like 1.5x facebooks. I am willing to give them 85, in a non recession year of course. This year it should be 0. In fact this year it should be negative, they should cancel existing h1b's.
There's no quotas on L1 or TN
The chance to be rejected is higher on L1 though. Also, it cannot be indefinitely extended and the company should have a subsidiary abroad. In addition, it is closer to slavery because you cannot change companies and if you are fired, you have to return back. If you didn’t get GC or H1B in 2-3 years, then likely you will have to go back to apply again.
Especially for this reason they should reduce the number of these temporary visas which is un civil state for any individual to be in.
We could try it. If you’re wrong, the worst that can happen is jobs being shipped abroad like we did with the entire manufacturing sector decades back. But I don’t think that’s gonna happen though. We have decades of precedent on big corporations doing the right thing and not at all thinking about the bottom line.
Even if we assume that the companies here will just outsource everything and not hire a single person locally, at least it won't drive the prices up for the local communities struck by homelessness and other problems. However, I'm sure it will drive initiatives to get more talent locally instead.
That’s not how economics works. You’re attributing homelessness to the fact that foreign labor gets added for a few high skill jobs, while ignoring all the real problems that lead up to it. If anything shipping jobs will exacerbate problems like homelessness. And I’m not pulling arguments out of my ass. We’ve had shortages of doctors and nursing staff for decades. We’ve had to import labor in those areas as well, but nothing, absolutely nothing, including hardened immigration policies, has had the effect on hospitals to actually invest more locally. All it has culminated into is more vacancies across the country causing more problems for people across the country. What your argument doesn’t account for, is the fact that there’s literally thousands of jobs that are directly created as a result of people getting paid a lot in your area. Shipping jobs abroad not only ships those few jobs abroad, but also all the other jobs that are supported by those few jobs. There’s a reason why Chinese middle class grew in the last 2 decades while ours shrank. And that’s kind of the same reason why Detroit as a city collapsed onto itself once all the automakers fled the city.
How do we prevent situations like this? Obama vs. trump white house interns.. SMH. Companies should strive to ensure that their company makeup represents America in its entirely. Quotas go left un-filled all the damn time as well so not sure why people get butt hurt when they hear the word ‘quotas’.
You can't make a privately owned company to do this. Everything is driven by the market therefore unless they don't have a better choice it won't happen. Once you put quotas in place that disturbs meritocracy resulting in less profits.
lol so you think what people like trump are doing is a *meritocracy*?! 🤣 and no one can ever force a company to do anything, nor does it ever happen.. but don’t be surprised if the public opinion of that company gets shamed.
It’s a simple mechanism of supply and demand. Big tech needs the domestic labor market as big as possible, so they can pay a lower *average* salary. (I don’t think any Indian workers at big tech are intentionally underpaid.) Plus, a bigger labor market consistently reinforced by further education (many Chinese got their job after a MS in CS) means higher performance potential, which in turn fuels the growth of these behemoth. Imagine paying your really average American colleague double what he or she is making today. The real problem is the division between big tech and average Americans who can’t afford a ridiculous college tuition. Google’s certificate program is a good start to fix part of the problem. (Of course, by doing so google keeps increasing the size of the labor market)
It would be nice if citizens of this countries didn't have to compete with people globally for positions in education and work tbh. China or other countries don't have this problem.
USA has the most expensive higher education on earth while in Europe it's almost free or $5-10k a year. So yeah there's definitely a sku and it's not fair for the locals if all positions are filled from abroad
