Joined FB in a Finance/FP&A/CorpDev role six months ago. The way it looks, there won’t be much chance for growth to Director (I am L7) However I have a nice boss and working on interesting stuff overall. WLB is great. 10 YOE and Stanford MBA. TC is $430ish (may get some refreshers and stock will appreciate, so $500K in 2-3 years would make sense). I get this nagging feeling I should move somewhere smaller and maximize potential. Any thoughts ?
In a small startup, you will get paid less, and you will most likely need to work more. This is all for less prestige than FB. Is this really what you are looking to do?
Additional considerations you didn’t specifically call out: 1. Are you continuing to grow in our role at a pace you are happy with? 2. What are your longer terms goals, and are you growing in the areas that you need to achieve your goals? 3. What’s at the root of that nagging feeling? Based on your post I’m guessing it’s you’re not being challenged.
1. Yes, but want to get deeper management experience and my team won’t ever be huge 2. Long term want to be an exec in a smaller tech company. Wondering if staying at FB with 10+ yr experience isn’t derailing that goal 3. Feel like there isn’t much to look forward to in terms of scope / depth of responsibilities won’t expand dramatically. Feeling like I am a highly paid and useful cog, but a cog nonetheless
Thanks. To reach your goal, you’ll need that management experience. If you can get that at FB, then I suspect it will be a great entry for you to get in to a smaller company as an exec down the road. The alternative of jumping ship now is you’ll need to get those experiences in a small company, which is also probably learning how to do it well along the way. FB May be a shortcut to attaining those skills. Lastly, if you cannot get in to a role that allows you to grow enough towards your goals, I’d make a change. Lastly, lastly, I’m sure you’re not a useless cog, but if that is your feeling, you either change something now or change something later and wish you’d done it sooner. Best of luck!
Thanks for the thoughtful response. Those are rare here and are much appreciated
Do you mind sharing what sort of experience you had prior to FB? I am looking to break into Corp Dev as well at a tech company and was just curious about the type of background that would seem relevant
Tier 1 investment bank, PE, Stanford MBA
Why do you think there is not much growth to Director? I thought facebook promotion is heavily on individual performance?
There are only so many directors ....
Do they have a rotation program since it looks like you have done a gamit it stuff coz you either do Corp Dev or Corp finance .. curious
How does the TC break out between salary/bonus/rsu?
240/60/150
My two cents: Use that money and branch off into other areas of personal interest
