Steve Huynh seems like the way more genuine version of the “Tech lead” aka Patrick on YouTube. Steve owns the YouTube channel called “A Life Engineer.” He recently quit his job at Amazon cause he wants to spend more time with his family now that he has a second child. He also created a program called “speedrun to promotion” where it seems like he’ll mentor 45 people in a group and on a 1:1 basis to mentor you and coach you. The program is 10k which essentially replaces his previous income as a L7 engineer at Amazon. At first, it seems like a scam like any other YouTuber trying to shill out a course to make money. However, like all courses and programs the reward is worth the money if it succeeds. If the program did help you get promoted at companies like Amazon, Meta, and Google you’re most likely going to get a bump of 60-100k in your TC which would offset the course and you’ll be more knowledgeable. What are your thoughts on this? TC: 330 #amazon
It’s easier to find an internal mentor(free of cost) who would probably have more context(can review docs unlike someone outside due to NDA) of the team, work and may end up giving promo feedback. Why “waste” 10K? Steve your free content has been good however this course seems like a scam
Internal mentors can also help you land the right opportunity to meet your career goals
he still there, hit him up on slack
The key to getting a promo entirely depends on your manager and team. You can listen to the bs Steve, tech lead, or any of these YouTubers publish but that won't change the fact that if your manager doesn't want to promo you then you're not getting promoted no matter what
"It is the ONLY place you can receive my coaching" While Steve himself not working and making you pay for his retirement 🤷♀️
I mean nothing’s free. This guy worked for, survived, and thrived at Amazon for many years when most would be PIP’ed or give up by their first or second year. So, this guy must know something, right? The question is the effectiveness of his counsel and this program.
Hey Steve, if you are reading, I liked your videos. But I feel this program is a bit rushed. I feel someone you collaborated with a similar program backed by YC makes more sense.
his course is very costly
Nice try Steve Huynh but you’re not Huynh’ing today.
I don’t think it’s a scam. Selling a program for $$$ didn’t automatically make it a scam. The real question is whether or not his coaching actually works at the end of the day. And how often? At what IC levels? It sounds like it works for all levels of being a SWE IC (up to the level he hit at least). I did watch his entire video about the program. And he will definitely have people lining up to pay. I just don’t think it’s made for the average person. It’s really there for someone that’s banging their head against the wall and just can’t get that promo.
This is a good point. I think I’m still a few years out for promo cause my org requires L5s to be in level for 3 years… which is stupid. Plus if I do get promoted it’ll only be like 20k bump for me.
