'Hindutva': The Radical Hindu Ideology That Seeks to 'Push Christianity Out of India’
Currently a contractor at Fitbit. Apple has given me a perm offer in Cupertino. Pay etc aside, how is working at Apple? I have seen some people that say don’t do it when talking about working at Apple. Role is test automation eng
Have your future opetions open in case you regret there. A colleague is trying to get back to Intel after joining there after 3 months
Did you colleague join iPhone Ops. If so, I might know him. Our org is absolute shit.
What's your title? I have friends do temp work and hate it
I said it in my post lol
Why do they hate it? Could it just be because they’re temps? Temps at Fitbit don’t seem that happy, but I figure most temps at any company aren’t treated the same.
Perm > Temp Apple > Fitbit ——————- Perm @ Apple > Temp @ Fitbit
Technically yes But I am very happy at Fitbit, so that’s why I was asking about the culture and if people enjoyed working there. I’d rather not be miserable
His point is still incredibly relevant. You might enjoy Fitbit but they’re obviously not as committed to you as you are to them. Don’t settle for being a temp when you’ve got a perm offer in hand. If it helps you any, I like working at Apple most days. My current project is starting to feel old to me and I feel an itch for something new but that’s the great part of being at Apple — there are plenty of great things to work on.
Idk man imo having Apple on your resume will open dozens of more doors then Fitbit Also the perks are great. You start with 12 pto 12 sick. We have thanksgiving week and Christmas week of. We get a solid amount off all apple products, not to mention corporate discounts at wel over 100 other places (30% off bose lol found that out yesterday) The culture is great (but I’m sure that varies based on manager and division) And the stock is reliable, the bonuses vest every 6 months @12.5%
What about work life balance? Many people I know in eng at Apple have no balance and have to work easily over 50 hrs/week. Some people I know work 10+ hr days and then even on weekends. Imo I don't think anything is worth that. For comparison, Fitbit has unlimited PTO and a very chill culture with no stress and a very good work life balance.
But some day you will get laid off.
From a contractor in Fitbit to perm at apple? Go for it right away. The people they hire are usually competent or at least the majority of the will be specialist in domain knowledge. The good thing is they will let you focus on being a specialist unless the job is obsoleted.
If that’s your only choice it’s ok. Try to move away as soon as you get here. Apple produces really shitty software. Siri started years earlier than others yet failed to build any moat. Till today it’s the only one that does not support flexible extensions. Apple software engineers are frogs at the bottom of a well, thinking what they build is “large scale”, “big data” in reality the traffic and data volume are pathetic comparing to google amazon Microsoft...
The strength is in the UX and product design, not web or big data. Software engineers are asked to compromise from many common practice so PD and UX can do things that are pretty. If OP is from Fitbit doing QE it will likely be in the motion or Apple Watch team, not Siri.
The answer depends on who you ask. Many people are unhappy with the culture. I suggest you to jose n and see and judge yourself. If you won't like it - change the group or the company.
I this this is an easy decision. Fitbit obviously isn’t interested in investing in you since you’re not a FTE there. If you love it, see if you can use this as a way to get FTE? If not, off to Apple with better pay, better perks, and and enormous company with all kinds to projects to work on internally.
Fitbit is contract to hire, and my contract is up in about 60 days which is why I sort of want to wait
But the other stuff you’re right about for sure
What’s your offer? Temp to perm is no brainer switch even if you are working on hottest area IMO. I personally don’t regret at all being at Apple. I do echo some of the other points mentioned here but not at that severity. We are not google or facebook, privacy is in our blood hence we are limited on data mining etc..
If it’s a role you’re interested in and the comp is an improvement - do it. I’ve heard good things from colleagues there, and more to the Machiavellian point, if you hate it just ride it out a year and it’s a great perm job on your resume to move elsewhere.
