Hello, Need help on what to do with horrible Uber offer as Operation Manager. Base: 139k RSU: 151k (valued at 40.80$/share) I have 10YOE in the field, managed people for 8 years and domain expert on the role offered. I was expecting at least double this. Recruiter said I would be coming in at Level 5a. And was trying to sell me the fact that the position is on a PM ladder and not Eng ladder. She is going to check with comp team and get back to me, but wanted to know what other @uber employees think about this, and if any advice can be given... Should I just drop it and forget about it?
Why do you think an operation manager should be on Engg career ladder?
Didn’t say that.
Leave 1 star and call another?
Youve been reading blind too much
Can you elaborate?
The engg ladder is entirely different than ops.. your pay is determined by supply-demand
I know that. But recruiter mentioned PM ladder. Never said ops. The title has ops in it tho yes.
Also, I understand it’s different. But is it THAT different?
So are you saying there is no room for negotiations? And if I don’t like it I should just leave it? Honest question. Trying to figure it out
Not sure why you’re so surprised. The difference between Eng and non-Eng roles at tech companies is usually significant, and can be massive. For example, I’m L5 at Google, but in People Ops. My base is comparable to an L4 PgM, or an L3 SWE with a couple years’ experience. My equity refreshers each year are comparable to an L3 SWE who’s on their second PIP. If you want to make the big money in tech, you need to be an engineer or a Product Manager. That said, those of us in non-Eng roles still usually do better financially in tech than we’d do in other industries, and way better in terms of work life balance.
Operations man. Not eng. different pay structure. All that stuff about role and responsibility is fluff
From my experience, non engg is just about 20-25% less.
What do you mean by RSU 151k ? Is it dollar amount ? Is it over 4 yr or per year ?
Pretty sure it's over 4 years

Offer seems at par with Ops positions. Would you rather be in Engg? The qualifications for Engg positions are different from Ops
Not arguing that (yet). But how come the discrepancy between PM and eng ladder are so different. I know of SWE getting in as 5a. With less YOEs and has an offer that is waaaaaaaaay higher. Also, the role itself is to drive building tools and a roadmap for some strategic Uber initiatives. I’m shocked by the numbers. And adding it’s a management position. Not IC.
Not sure why you mentioned PM. If you meant program manager then there is nothing strategic about that position. You got carried away by the marketing - “drive building tools and roadmap for strategic initiatives” is commonly used within Uber
