I just finished a design interview with Tiktok with an Asian (non-Chinese) guy. Probably many folks will not believe, but I swear to God it's 100% true. Here is the script: Interviewer: Hi. Do you know which company you are interviewing for? Me: Yes. it's Tiktok. Interviewer: So why do you still interview? Me: Mmm 'cause it's a big company... Interviewer: Do you know we will get banned soon? Me: Mmm I believe it would still be fine. Interviewer: Haha, I like your positivity. Me: Thank you Interviewer: But you could be fired at any time? Are you fine with that? Me: Layoff can happen at any company now, so I'm fine. Interviewer: Cool. you're very brave. I like that. Me: Thanks again. Interviewer: Our team also contain a few people that I personally don't like working with them much. You usually need to meet at night too. Are you fine with that? Me: Mmm I'm fine. Interviewer: Okay let's start the interview. What a cool introduction for a design interview! The dude is like "Dude, let's run away, run away". TC: 350k
Hey I got the same experience. Not to your extreme conversation but the dude was like "No good here. Run" and he was Chinese in US lol. Can't imagine what it is for non-Chinese
š¤£ was that an Asian interviewer? The convo is 10x funny in an Asian accent.
Such honesty! You don't find it very often.
That's what a good interviewer should do. He is setting realistic expectations for you to know ahead of time. Had something similar at DoorDash at end of interview. Eg: work regularly past 10. Have depression, etc.
so are you going to run away?
Just interview to practice interviews tho
Incredibly based lol
Clear and Candid is one of our core values. In my interview, my interviewer verbatim asked me "you don't speak Chinese, how will you survive at TikTok?" Some people will freak out at such a question and respond with: "Why did you interview me and waste my time, your recruiter could've asked in the first call, this is America, blah blah blah." Other candidates will answer it in a positive way. "Yes even though I don't speak Chinese, I will be patient and make sure to use clear language free of cultural jargon, I will leverage the translation tools available to me, I have past experience effectively working with people of different cultures, etc." That is the test.
Wish my interviewers were like him. They suck all the joy and oxygen out of me in less than an hour.
āThanks againā hahahaha
