I got laid off from Meta in Feb, and was interviewing like crazy. Joined MSFT last week, but still in the Google team match process. For the right team I can ditch MSFT, but joined anyway since the team match was uncertain. Any idea how long it is taking right now? This is for a Data Science role. Also, will Google allow a fully remote role? MSFT did hire me for a fully remote role. The only reason I didn’t go to Amazon was that they were not at all open to remote roles. TC 250k, YoE 3
You and ppl like you are why we can't have nice things. Get off your high horse.
What am I doing?
1) Extremely unlikely that Google allows you to be remote at 3.5 YOE and at L3/L4 2) I really wouldn't expect the Google team match to go anywhere because the competition for roles is already high internally.
No remote for Google for sure. Team match depends on location. For some location it was up to half a year even in a good market. Could be never right now
You cannot get hired remotely at Google, but I've heard of people hired for office and then requesting remote, and it was often approved. All of this recently in the past few months. But it might depend on PA, but I think Google will slowly allow more remote over time, although not by default as MSFT. Also, these people had some niche skills, so I guess Google really wanted to keep them.
I am stuck in Google team matching for 2y now (reinterviewed, so my results will expire again soon). You will win lottery before you join a decent Google team with good WLB and career trajectory. Almost all of my TM calls were really bad managers, you can see they are not pleasant to work with, one that was good and I accepted could not get headcount from his VP in the end. So, yes, good teams will hire internally and if they try externally, they will not succeed. Rare exceptions such as Gemini exist (I know folks there, and they're smart and not assholes), but you need to be even more lucky to get in because they require niche ML modeling knowledge, but say bye to your WLB then. Yes, MSFT also sucks, but we're at least remote and you have some chances getting promoted. Money is worse, but I doubt you will get much more at G.
No. If I were you, I would just stay at MS. You are lucky to be there as an external. the benefits and WLB are unbeatable. Also, the only major tech company offering remote. Gives a lot of options on where to live.
Really? WLB is unbeatable? It's a company with 200k employees. It's foolish to think the entire company has WLB.
No one is “lucky” to be at M$FT
