Its right before the holidays. I am curious about the timeline from a verbal offer to usual "day 1".
From what I understand, the steps are usually:
- Make the formal offer which requires:
* Recruiter works with hiring manager to review the discussion from the candidate call and form an offer strategy.
* Recruiter composes offer and submits to HR
* Comp and inclusion review as part of reviews
* Approver (HM, Partner, or CVP based on level)
- Recruiter refreshes Offer to candidate conditional on background check
* Input from others is that Microsoft tries to "go to the well" only once - negotiate the verbal and then be ready to make a decision
- Background check starts / access issued to candidate to complete input form
- Candidate submits background
- Background check completes
- Recruiter returns to candidate with confirmation and a recommended start date
- Start date / onboarding
So, the questions:
What did I miss? How long does this stuff usually take? Thinking about what this means and when around the various holidays at this point.

But im comfortable we will reach agreement. Interview process has been good, the people are fantastic, and communication with the recruiter has been open and mostly collaborative.
I hate this part of the process. Hate the game. “Gee lets both be adversarial and distrustful as part of establishing a long term career relationship.” Yet without the negotiation, career context would be missed and all manner of situations wouldn’t be recognized by completely automated no-haggle offers.
