Good riddance. Demanding to know the identities of your paper’s reviewers so that you can inevitably intimidate and retaliate against them for their feedback, as Timnit has done dozens of times on Twitter, is unacceptable. She should be fired, and she gave them an easy out by giving them an ultimatum that she would resign if her demands were not met. Too long has Google put up with SJW trying to force others into believing that any criticism of anything done by a black person ever is racism. Also, she was not a “top expert”. She was an L6 mid-level employee. She called herself a top expert, and her SJW Twitter mob pushed the term like she was. The media needs to stop hyping her up like she invented Deep Learning or something. I read the doc from Jeff Dean, my first impression was that she didn't follow the review process or the paper was revealing a problem in Google AI (Hacker news comments) I inclined for the first one
The paper purposely ignored the truth to make tech look as evil as possible (which is her whole agenda) and then when she got pushback, she demanded to know who it was from or she would resign, and Google is like, ok bye. You don’t get to just do whatever you want and be rude as absolute fuck because you are an ethics researcher. You follow the rules just like everyone else has to. You don’t get to intimidate people just because you are a leftist and your intimidation is the “right” intimidation. Btw I’m liberal as fuck, but this ain’t it.
Wise words
You know she is a tech lead for Ethical AI team and yes expert in her field (do research her contribution). She is there on a mission. To avoid the bias. She isn’t there chasing TC. So fighting what she is believed in makes her a hero. So you want her to suck it up and be a slave?
What level was she, btw?
Yet another professional victim bankrolling her status rather than her abilities. Shitting on the plate she was eating from did not do her any good, evidently.
Re: the poll, can't it be both?
Nah. Google was more than happy to parade her accomplishments around to lend credibility to their AI ethics program, but drop her without so much as a conversation based on “missing research” and an “approval process she didn’t follow”. How many papers has she published there? She’s not going to forget the process. The truth is her work probably touched on something that’s didn’t align with company goals. This was retaliation and overt racism, plain as day.
That’s not why they dropped her. They dropped her because she told her reports to “stop trying” and “stop working on DEI efforts”, said that management “didn’t care” about blatant racism, and that Google was “dehumanizing” her. She also gave Google an ultimatum. She absolutely did not get fired for “missing research” or “not following an approval process”. She got fired for threatening to resign if she didn’t get special treatment to harass anyone who critiques her research.
Oh, so she was fired for asking for accountability? Thanks for clarifying. Did we even read the same letters?
What is this poll? How about an option for Google wanted to block a paper from being published that suggested a technique they invested a lot in has biases that might not be easy to fix.
Or that they don’t care and don’t want to see the bias.
She was a Google employee, if Google wants something, she does it. How is this hard?
FB also has an internal review for publications with the same two-week lead time for major conferences, and if some jagoff circumvented it then sent an email list of "demands" they would of course be fired on the spot regardless of gender, race, color, or creed. I trust Jeff Dean's ability to be impartial a lot more than I trust Timnit Gebru's, especially given her email. With all the misleading narrative, 'demands', etc. this shit is Meredith Whittaker all over again other than Timnit actually has a PhD and does research.
Yup, if you refused to follow the paper review process at Amazon and sent a list of demands to your VP, you would be shitcanned way faster and harder than this. Google is such a sissified place it is ridiculous. Is there racism at Google and other companies? Sure, people are racist. Is it racist to fire somebody who acts like a toxic asshole? No, no it's not
More of a dimwit lol
People raising social justice issues solely to further their careers are damaging the cause. Good. bye.
God damn there are some trash views around here.
QQJf32 you literally go around to every post shitting on anyone that doesn’t bleed race issues. wMYX12 makes a great point. Dying on the hill... every time... you never win. When everything is a race issue then how is anything supposed to get done? And I know plenty of people who have pushed themselves into bullshit diversity positions that are a complete pipe dream, just to make their political opinions their jobs. The problem is... companies are actively choosing one race or the other. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, racism is global... but it’s not systemic. If it was, why does big tech hire so many Asians? What... they are multicultural racists? GTFO of here.
