I had a delayed flight, due to which I missed the connecting flight. Since it was a significant delay, Delta provided an Accommodation voucher and a meal voucher. I booked my stay at a motel closest to the airport and called their airport shuttle. The motel is 1.4 miles away from the terminal and the driver took half an hour to arrive. As soon as I got into the van, he started saying, I hope you tip me well man, I drove after midnight (00:15 am ) to pick you up. When I got down at the motel, the driver got out and ran to the back of the van and handed me over my cabin bag. Realizing his expectation, I handed him a 10$ bill from my wallet. He immediately says " gimme one more, come on man, gimme something, I drove up past midnight and had music for you in the van, you gotta give me some more change." I said I already tipped generously and the man started muttering some incoherent non-sense. This tipping culture and entitlement is getting out of hand. #misc
black or Hispanic driver?
Black, old man -- 55+ Could be anyone though.
What's race got to do with it?
Start telling jokes in the cab next time and then ask him to tip you because he attended your comedy act and you made him laugh. Honestly though, times are rough and people are struggling to make ends meet. Just tip a few people well and help them out, will make you feel better than a random charity. Not the case for everyone, use your judgement.
10$ is generous. Tbh, I thought of giving a 5, but I was in a good space of mind today, so my hand picked a 10. I agree with your assessment of current economic climate.
My wife and I got tired of this scam BS especially with the Caribbean taxi drivers. Taxies and free shuttles get 0 tips because that's their job. Restaurants get 15% tips if they take the order at the table and serve our food. Coffee shops get 0 tips on the 6$ coffees. Take out orders get 0 tips. barber gets 20% tip.
So why 20% for barber? Aren't they getting paid for exactly what they are supposed to do ? Cut hair ? Or do you call them to your home ?
$10 was adequate although I probably would have given $20 since it was past midnight. Congratulations on scoring vouchers from Delta, they are hard to come by.
$10 is good enough. He’s just trying to squeeze as much as possible out of everyone he meets, he knows he won’t see you again, do not waste your time thinking of this person anymore
An engineer who's getting $95k and is the sole breadwinner, needs to wake up past midnight for a prod issue, should also be asking his mandatory tip.
The driver works a non-exempt, hourly job. The SWE is in a professional position being paid more than 90% of the population. Rolling out of bed to go work on your computer in your PJs is different than being called out after midnight to do a pick up
Sure, but the hotel website says their shuttle runs till 1 am. And, I think he was rewarded fairly for driving a 4 mile round trip.
> Realizing his expectation, I handed him a 10$ bill from my wallet Why?
Just to be nice. Such is the culture in North America, not tipping seems to be rude. I am just trying to fit in.
I expect you to give me $1m. Don’t be rude, just fit!
Who's Ashley?
