Reddit is complaining today about non-tipping Indians. How are you all about tipping? (Dont give me crap about how wrong tipping culture is. It is what it is for now) https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/derwva/til_that_americans_are_the_most_charitable_people/f2yyrmf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I try and tip rounding off to the next +$2 for every $10. I am still looked down as a stinky creepy brown peasant!
Why?
I’m a typical white person, so I tip 30%
classic trolling
What’s troll-y about this?
Many Indians like myself tip around 20 percent which to be honest is a fair to a good tip
Those people are just sharing their own experiences as tip-dependent-wage workers.
20-30% always, only go above or below that if for some exceptional reason.
I think other than US the whole tipping culture is not very common in rest of the world; that being said- be a Roman in Rome. Poor tippers are usually FOB students/families due to ignorance. India, China and most asian countries are a saving economy as in they DONT like to spend and would protect every hard earned penney they make, things are changing now. Foreign Nationals should be given America-101 before they take a plane here!.
I think other than India, caste culture is not very common in rest of the world
Disagree. Look up "Bourgeois" and tell me where it originates from. I have a French friend telling how people are seggregated in France; Persians have a divide among themselves. You just see the larger sample size and determine the non existance in other countries.
I'm very consciously generous about tipping, with any establishment. Unless the service is super bad, I don't tip anything less than 15%. My wife says I'm bad that I even tip when we do pick up orders, so there's that. But I know many of my peers and even within my extended family that people find it is okay (especially when I'm in India) to not tip. I've tried working out why that could be, and reasoned with them. After these many years, I have given up. People will change only if they want to change.
I tip taxi drivers, hairdressers, waiters and amazon prime delivery people. Whom else should I be tipping?
The desk girl at the gym.
Significant other for “bodily” services?
15% if service is satisfactory , 20 or 25% if service is good or exceptional
This was the standard 5 years ago. Restaurants have been changing it to 20% satisfactory and 25-30% is exceptional. I honestly hate tipping and wished they'd just charge more for the food and we yup like 10% if service was exceptional, I shouldnt tip for basic services like getting my food.
Tipping at restaurants? Now what’s that? 🧐

Crossed a line with my boss
This is the primary reason I tip handsomely, hoping to change peoples perspective, but then I have been told I am an anomaly. I intentionally take care of the whole check when I go out with friends so that I can tip well, the others, are very frugal with tipping as I have seen.
Kudos. So many idiots claim they don't tip well on principle , cuz they want to see it changed where workers get living wage and don't rely on tips. I think most of them are full of BS.
I think that is bullshit. Sometimes you create lies in your head to justify your own wrongdoings. This is probably one. Another reason why Indians don’t generally tip well is probably because we aren’t use to tipping this well in India and in general most of us are frugal, how else do you fund the 80k per year private school tuition fees of your kid 😂. Asians in general tend to be more frugal with money, with savings being the highest priority.
