Tips to save money in San Francisco?

What are some tips to save money in SF? I am willing to share an apartment with someone (3 people including me at max). Also is it possible to have an individual room to myself if I move a bit far and commute? My primary expenses: 1) Groceries 2) Rent 3) Commute 4) Leisure (Movies, Eating out, Gaming Setup) 5) Utilities (WiFi, electricity etc and very few subscription services like Netflix, HBO, Hulu etc I want to live a simple yet comfortable life. My goals are to buy a house and FIRE. I am clueless about investing and stuff (I like to play safe though and I am not a risk taker). I would really appreciate your inputs. I am a new grad and I am planning to donate my first year base salary (after deducting monthly expenses) to a noble cause and my parents since they paid my tuition fees. TC: 183k YOE: 0

Don't donate your first year salary. That's the most valuable money you will make. Donate more later when you're making more and there are better tax benefits for donating.

Rent is probably your biggest expense, reduce that. Why do you wanna stay in sf when everything is remote

Salesforce McLovinn OP Oct 1, 2020

I'll have to move someday right? This is not going to go on forever.

Not until next year. I would find a good m2m deal in suburbs. 6-10k savings is a lot. Plus in city you automatically spend more. Eating out n sht

Live with roommates. At LEAST two others. Don’t eat out/DoorDash too much, you can save a lot just by cooking your own food. I rarely grocery shop, just order from imperfect foods every two weeks which helps keep grocery budget under control. Also consider living in Oakland. Rent there is a little cheaper, still pricey though. You should definitely have a room to yourself either way. Nobody in tech is sharing bunk beds with another adult; living that way when you’re in your prime is not worth retiring a year or two earlier. For your commute, try biking

Thanks!

Move away from the city. Daly City, Colma, South Bay or east bay Share a 3 bedroom apartment with however many people you like. You might be able to get a one bedroom and still save Don’t get a car unless absolutely necessary. Don’t eat out a lot. Cook your own meals
