I’m considering a team that seems great: - In the growth mode; - Tons of new opportunities - Several senior team members - ... However, there is a problem: Due to the growth, the old manager has added 5 new managers to the hieraechy: Each subteam will report to one of those 5 managers that will report to the old one. All these managers are new to Google and so we do not know them well. Is this a redflag to you? Thanks all
Your manager is going to be fighting for their own foothold, he/she won't have leverage and time to fight for yours
Aren’t our goals aligned?
5 in the hierarchy? Thats a lot. Also will u report "to" the manager or "on"?
Typo :D The team has 50; Each new manager will handle 10
As long as the manager has previous managerial experience outside of Google, doesn’t seem like a red flag to me at all.
The manager had 10+ managerial experience, but the concern is that apparently managers should fight for your promo
Personally don’t see the issue then - sounds like a solid team to join If you’re good I’m sure he can still fight for you - not sure why being in Google previously makes such a big difference
The skip who added 5 "new" managers is probably more concerned about this than you are. Think about it from his POV - these 5 are probably highly vetted. No?
I strongly hope so, and the skip has an excellent history at Google and very supportive (has set weekly office hours for the teams). The only concern is that the new manager may not know the politics needed to fight for promo/rating cases.
Location? Yoe? When did you interview before getting team match?
MTV; Less than a year; 9 months ago
What level are you right now? The biggest impact will be perf. If you will have a lot of visibility to the old manager then this may not be as bad.
I’m L4, the new manager is L6 or L7. The skip one is L8. For this perf, I’m in a different team
Yeah it will take a few cycles for the new managers to learn how to navigate perf, so if you want to go for promo soon that could be a factor as a L4.
Probably fine. Doesn't seem weird to me. Managing 50 people doesn't sound fun or easy.
Not good, I want a manager who's technically strong and know his way around the political landscape.
How to find this?
Btw, he has been a manager for 10 years but not in Google
