I will be joining Netflix soon as an L4. I feel like I’m an L5, but I f*** up the system design cause I really wanted Netflix. (I was leveled at L5 at Roblox) anyways some questions: 1. How’s the promotion process from L4 to L5? I know you guys just started leveling but any advice/ insight would be great! 2. Did you do the stock options or pure cash? And why? what percentage of your income if you don’t mind me asking? 3. I have options to work in Los Gatos or the LA office. Which one do you prefer and why? 4. I’m about to be 30, and I want to make friends, is it easy to do so at Netflix? 5. I know there’s a small plane that travels from LA to Los Gatos. Do you know how often? I have the option to be remote. But I like the office comraderie experience so choosing to be hybrid.
Nice. Can you spill more on the interview structure/ experience/ difficulty(yeah, I know it’s relative). Are you currently an L5 in AMZ?
1. Hasn't happened much yet but likely similar to other companies, ~3yrs or so? Most likely, your comp will gradually increase each year until a promotion when you are closer to L5 band. 2. Almost everyone now goes pure cash, options are more of a gamble now and were much better in the past 10yrs when netflix was a growth stock. 3. LA just bc LA > Bay Area imo. 4. Yeah lots of 30+ individuals at Netflix. 5. Yeah you can, you need to book it early and typically if you are working / going to an event in the other office. Not sure how often it runs.
Agree with above, except: 3. For LG vs LA, I'd pick whichever one your team is more clustered at. If it is even, pick based on personal preference, or just pick LG because it has most of the engineering/tech teams. If you care about making friends from work, you'd want to be where people who are similar to you are located. 5. You can absolutely not bring your spouse, period. I'm assuming the above person misread your post. The plane is specifically for work-related use (offsite, important meetings, etc.) and can't be used casually for fun. Guests are not ever allowed. That said, everyone from L4s to the CEOs use it when needed.
OP off topic but can you help share some resume tips on how to get a call back from Netflix.
Congrats OP! I'll be joining Netflix in Feb as well. 1. No ideas about L4 -> L5 promos. I'll let others chime in. 2. From what I've read, Netflix options are a high-risk/high-reward proposition. The options are at a discount, but whether to participate or not depends a lot on your personal risk tolerance and financial goals. That said, I've heard that most of engineering is based out of LG, so that would be my preferred location since I want to be closer to other engineering teams. 4. Netflix demographic skews older since most engineers are senior+ with significant tenure. So it shouldn't be too hard to find like-minded people. Making friends as an adult - that depends on your social skills I guess. 5. No idea about the policies here - but I'd be surprised if partners are allowed. That wouldn't fit Netflix's culture of doing right by the company. Good luck with your new role!
