Should I marry a lazy girl?
I am working as a senior engineer, and in the past six months, I started to deal with a toxic uber- techlead; these are some (but not all of his annoying behaviors) - He bypasses senior engineers and independently assigns tasks to junior engineers without communication. This creates much ambiguity for the team. He gives tasks without any clear written plan and guidelines. He stops by people's desks and asks them to do stuff. - He competes with senior engineers by bashing their work and promoting his parallel effort. [I feel he has significant insecurity since he was converted to IC this year.] - In several cases, he asks people to do similar work, resulting in competition inside the team. - He purposefully assigns dummy or dead-end tasks to the people who oppose them to prevent them from having a meaningful impact. - Messages at weird times, 10 pm or later, asking for stuff to do. Pushes everyone in the team to work overtime. - The most hateful thing is that he is supporting people from his country very closely for promotions and favors them a lot. Unfortunately, there is a large gang of people from the same country [on very high levels] in this org, only supporting each other. So the question is how to deal with the situation?. My biggest concern is that I was on track for promotion, and since I have conflicts with him, I have no hope for promotion. He is much senior to me and my skip manager, and they never would want to confront him. My manager told me this guy comes to the PSC sessions, and his opinion is the critical factor for the rating. I like the technical work in this org and want to find a way to stay at my current org. -- Edit: uber-techlead means overseeing an org a few teams. TC: 400K YOE: 5
So are you in Uber or Meta? That TC is seriously high.
+1. Also level?
Find a new role or leave the company. Not worth to fight with incompetence. You deserve better!
Which country are you referring here?
we all know which one
Align with him somehow or change team. Only 2 options
What's a tech lead at Uber? An L5b among L5as, or another L5a who's been formally or informally assigned the duties of a tech lead?
Change teams, I see no other way here.
Is this an L5b or L6?
Conflict is a normal part of the job, I guess the uber lead knows this, otherwise they wouldn’t be there. This seems to be a growth situation for you and is ok to struggle. Go for the promo, make sure to align with the uber lead on their goals and projects. Good luck!

You know what you must do. Challenge him to a duel to the death
