I am beginning the interview process with Toyota North America in Plano, Texas for a Principal Software Engineering role. There is not a lot of data on levels.fyi for compensation especially stocks, bonus, profit sharing, etc. I am sure I will get pressed in the phone screen to lock in a base salary expectation and will do the usual attempts to defer that for later in the process. However, can someone at Toyota maybe give me a break down of typical compensation for that level of role, and the norms for the other parts of the compensation outside of base pay (i.e. stocks, bonus targets, etc.) Thanks #engineering #software #swe
Great previous reply. I worked for them for about 15 yrs and over the years the comp improved but will not be anywhere near FAANG companies. But it’s a trade off, low comp, live okay salary with benefits BUT never get rich. Haha. All comes down to level, so I agree, Principle Engineer is JL18-JL19. Salaries are ranging from $130-$180k. But bonus for JL18 around 17-19%. Don’t forget car allowance. Equals about $12k a year(before tax of course). But lease cars are much cheaper in corporate then dealer. Also car comes with insurance and maintenance paid. So that’s going to save you money. Plus 401k: they match 6% and pension replacement, not sure about that anymore since it’s changed a lot.
do you know if all Toyota/Lexus vehicles are eligible for lease? I think EVs weren’t, but not sure if there were other restrictions.
All are included. Sometimes, when it’s a brand new high demand vehicle, they suspend it for few months away from employees to order. Like Supra when initially launched.
Relocation package is sweet and you can make a lot from it. It’s also tax deferred. If moving a family, you will pocket about $30k cash (includes lump sum of temp living plus food allowance etc) plus relocation of your home goods (white glove service) and 2 vehicles. But keep in mind, you have to stay for at least 2 yrs or relocation will have to be paid back, prorated.
As a JL18-JL19: you will make with all in about $220k a year. (Includes salary, bonus, 401k, medical benefits)
@toyota. I have an offer to join Toyota as a long term contractor. What are the chances of getting absorbed as full time ?
Depends on the department and your contract, but odds are low for the first 3-5 years. I'd assume your contract says you won't apply to Toyota. If your contract has no exclusions and you're a rockstar, you'll need to build your network and look for opportunities to apply. No one will "find you". There's no natural process for converting contractors
I would probably not bank on that and if you really want to be a direct hire try to force the issue now if you can. Otherwise I would treat it as a contract and look for what you really want.
Agree with above Toyota feedback! Make sure your a rockstar but also, keep up in the job market and ‘try’ to work on things where you will learn and grow. In case Toyota keeps lingering you on, you can still apply outside and not waste time hoping to get hired.
Since no one replied to you, I'll do my best. I do not work in Software Engineering, but here's what Ive heard: That posting is most likely a JL18-JL20 independent contributor. Depending on the department and role specifics it's like got a median salary of 140k-180k, higher if you're managing people or working on some advanced application. Bonus target is likely 12%-15% of salary. I'm not aware of any RSU or similar options. You might be able to negotiate a sign on bonus. Toyota typically isn't the highest for overall comp, but the healthcare and other medical benefits are top tier. And it's extremely stable so your odds of being laid off are nearly zero.
@ssES13 - Hey appreciate the insight there. Do you know if their relocation package is basically like a direct bill for all cost (i.e. the mover just bills the company like they do for large companies like Goog, MSFT, PG, etc.) or is it like here is $5k hope it works. I am assuming it is the former, but again not much public info on it. Thanks
I think the basic package covers closing costs on your house and maybe moving expenses? I'll send you something
