Has anyone transferred Canadian car to USA for personal usage? I checked the process from internet search but some quick guidance from personal experience would be helpful. Question I have, Car is on my name in Canada, want to send it to my kid studying there. Do I have to transfer car ownership to my kid in Canada first and then transfer to USA?
Pain in the you know what. You have to import it first. Big issue is if your car TPMS FACTORY installed (aftermarket doesn’t work most of the time). Most safety equipment in Canada meets USA standards but TPMS not required in Canada. You need a letter from manufacturer to bring to USA customs. Once in customs you pay a fee which can be large depending on value of car. . Then you go to the State DMV where you are and provide all paperwork and they do an inspection and give you a license. This is on Google, “https://breezecustoms.com/blog/importing-vehicles-into-the-united-states/importing-a-car-from-canada-to-the-us/“ but you do it yourself. Any USA customs office works. We have them north and south and coasts in USA. At end you send something to the province saying sayonara. If car here already you have one year to import or they can take it and confiscate it (and crush it). Car must be paid off to import I believe. In summary, unless you are in love with your car, it’s better to sell there and buy here. Just drive car back if here or have it shipped back (cost could be up to 3k).
Awesome! Thx!
If you have an older car you want to get rid off, then you can ship it here and use it for a year. TPMS doesnt apply if the cars older than 2007 if I recall (Honda civic 2004 in my case). I did all the steps mentioned above, but car served me well until I got a new one. I sold it to a junk yard after.
