I am early in my marketing career and the only jobs that I seem to be qualified for are social media roles at the moment. I am in CPG Cosmetics/Beauty as Digital Marketing Coordinator and I want to get into Product Marketing or Growth Marketing for my next position. Any recommendations on how to make the transition and/or what I skills I should acquire for product marketing? TC: 45k YOE: 2 yr
A Product Marketing certification may help. In addition, a Certified Scrum Master cert will surely boost your TC and make you more marketable. TC 180k Digital Project Mgr
Thanks for the solid advice. There are a lots of companies now promoting Product Marketing Cert, is there any particular company/university that you recommend is highly respected? I was looking into the one available by LinkedIn but I’m not sure if employers take that certification seriously.
Pragmatic Marketing is well respected and well known within the PMM space. I’ve also heard of Sirius. And PMA is a newer one but I’ve heard good and bad things so unclear if it’s worth it or not
If you want to try your hand at general marketing, DM me- Compass is always looking for quality Marketing Advisors of all stripes.
DM sent :)
I’m a Senior Growth Marketing Manager. Definitely recommend getting some certificates in inbound marketing, paid ads, email marketing, and growth strategy. Try HubSpot Academy as they’re all free! TC: 135k YOE: 6
Product Marketing Alliance certification seems a good choice. Check out their slack for general networking and advice, the community is helpful.
I will definitely join their slack community! Thank you
You can also look into developing program or project management skills in your current role if it allows, and then looking into any Marketing Program Manager role. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.
Are you able to juggle work and an mba program?
You don't need an MBA for product marketing, at all. It's just more unnecessary debt. Looking into skills as a product practitioner and understanding messaging is all you need.
I could do an mba, but I’d rather transfer to a new company which can sponsor/reimburse my education. My current employer does not have educational reimbursements for employees at the moment, unfortunately.
Try to find associate product marketing or product marketing specialist roles, should be able to get in and still get paid better
Be good at selling yourself and BSing. Are you a man or a woman? If you’re a woman, don’t wait to be perfect, just think that you are. If you are a woman, ask for jobs you think you’re not qualified for. Work hard at finding mentors and role models and building relationships. Culture is everything, be fun to work with.
I second the MBA suggestion. Easy way to advance!
I am female! And I’m actively expanding my network as much as I can through LinkedIn, Slack Communities, and Blind to find the right connections.
A lot of suggestions will tell you to choose a path (social, Ppc, SEO, email, affiliates, etc.) and focus on it. Which is definitely a great way to be laser focused on one part of digital marketing. For me personally I have been a “t shaped marketer” which is essentially is a jack of all trades but have a higher expertise in SEO and ppc. A lot of companies especially b2b are now looking for t shaped marketers.
Best advice here. I’m T-shaped as well. I’m 3 years in, general marketing title, $80K salary.
Get really good at 1 or 2 (2) things. I’m in growth marketing, 5 YOE and my specialities are paid social and CRO TC: 145k
Thank you! I will look into certifications for these skills. Let me know if you recommend any!
Hi! Could I ask how many YOE you have? And where are you based? Just wanna compare the TC for a growth marketing manager, thanks!
