Looking to finally make the switch over from a HW EPM to a SWE after a LONG time (reason: I'm over scheduling meetings, taking notes, dealing with timelines, resources, etc). Over the years, I've taken a few MOOC's (Udacity - Self driving nano degree, Coursera - ML) and most recently a couple C++ classes through a local community college (as I originally thought about going the OMSCS route). I most certainly enjoy the work and realized how much I miss building things as an engineer. I've been a bit confused / hung up on what the next step should be. At the moment, I'm leaning towards building out a full stack project + DS&A practice over the next couple of months before submitting applications to companies. Oh and I'm also looking to leave my current gig and focus on this full time to help expedite the process (finances to support myself aren't an issue). Wanted to see if anyone had any additional thoughts or advice to add here? TC: 300k; 9 YOE #tech #career #swe
You can also considering becoming a proper PM at a google, Facebook etc. you’ll be closer to building stuff if you don’t want to go full SWE
You honestly might find it easier to stay at Apple and look for a role with an adjacent team or elsewhere in the company than leaving and just trying to apply to new places as a SWE. I don’t know for sure since I haven’t done this, but I’d assume you might have more luck
Unfortunately the process to transfer internally in the same as applying from outside.
What don’t you like about HW EPM? I’m trying to make the opposite switch.
In general, I'm not really that excited or passionate about the key R&R's for my role. Most of what I'm doing these days are setting up meetings, driving discussions / AI's, putting together a schedule, refining slides for exec reviews, gathering status and updating dashboards, and escalating issues / resource constraints. There's a fair amount of context switching and most of my days are taken up sitting in meetings and repeating or hearing the same message. There isn't much creative contribution and I miss having focused challenging technical work. What's your role and why are you considering the switch?
